Hi all. I just got an SL2 used. It was in a ‘like new’ condition. Very happy with it.

I just wanted to check that’s it’s correct when the camera is on, you can hear a noise coming from the camera when you put your ear to it?

I don’t mean the autofocus noise. There is a whirring/whooshing noise, almost like a fan noise. Is that the IBIS working?

Only asking as I come from the M10D which is totally silent when switched on.

Thanks.

Does it make the same noise with the IBIS turned off?

I guess that’s turning the setting ‘Image Stabilization’ to off? It’s the same. Maybe it’s just an operational sound. I can only hear it when it’s close to my ear.

Hi guys! I just noticed the same thing in my SL2S. There’s a low faint hum when the camera is on then it ramps up ever so slightly when I half press to focus.

The latter sound goes away when I turn off IBIS so it’s definitely linked to that. But is it normal for IBIS to make that sound?

What’s odd is that I feel like it MAY have always been there but I didn’t notice 😅

I hear the same noise from my SL2-S without ibis or prefocus.

This is normal for the SL2 and SL2-S.

The camera sensor floats in the magnetic field because this is needed for controlling the IBIS movement.
When the camera is off, the magnetic field is also off so the sensor then move freely inside the camera.
You can hear that when the camera is off and you shake the camera.
It sound like something is loose inside. This is normal...

When you want to clean the sensor on the SL2 and SL2-S you need to turn the camera on so the sensor
get fixed in the place with the magnetic field.
The IBIS also must be turned off for the cleaning procedure other wise you risk damaging the sensor.

So even if the IBIS is on or off,  because magnetic field hold the sensor it will make this “noise“.
Nothing to worry about...

I’m glad I found this information because the sound got me worried a bit. The light humming sound is indeed less apparent with IBIS turned off. When I put my ear immediately on the camera, there is still a very soft humming, albeit much softer than with IBIS. Is this the effect of the magnetic field in function?

I just put my ear to my SL2. Yes, there is a faint sound.

I  listened more carefully, increasing the level of my hearing aid, and I was able to decipher what the noise is. The camera plaintively begs me to "please feed me some images, I need to feel the light entering my so sweet sensor".

It is minus 15°C outside, I still will dress up and go feed the camera, how could I ignore its plea?

We see this question on the internet for virtually every digital camera - yes, digital cameras in general can produce faint sounds. It depends a bit on the hearing of the owner.
