I’m trying to find information about two very different ‘Classic Camera’ magazines, one of which featured a lot of Leica content, and I hope members here may know some of the background.

The first is a glossy 48-page A4-size publication entitled ‘Classic Camera’ and published quarterly in Italy, the USA and the UK. I have 11 random issues of this, from # 1 in February 1997 to # 21 in February 2002. Up to at least # 18 the magazine is bi-lingual – English and Italian – but # 21 (and later issues?) is only in English. Regular contributors include well-known Leica authors James Lager and Luigi Crescenzi. Is this magazine still being published? If not, when did it cease? Back-numbers are available on internet auction sites, but some back-numbers are not bi-lingual and I think I've seen copies in languages other than English – was there a separate run, with different issue numbers, of non-English editions? Any information about this magazine and its history would be most welcome.

I only have one issue of the second magazine – # 33, no date apart from a 1998 copyright. This is a 32-page A5 booklet bearing the full title ‘Classic Camera Magazine’ (ISSN 0961-7957). It appears to have been home-produced in Halifax, UK, by Fred and Stephanie Marriott. Again, does anyone know the background to this small publication? When did it start? Is it still being published? Googling has produced very little information and, unlike the glossier ‘Classic Camera’, back-numbers do not show up on internet auction sites.

Thank you, that's very helpful. It would appear that 'Classic Camera' does still exist (in Italian only?) and that in 2012 it changed from being a magazine about camera collecting and became 'Classic Camera Black & White', a magazine about monochrome photography. Also, as the Italian #1 is dated January 1992, the magazine would appear to have used a different numbering sequence for the bilingual and English-only editions.

I have multiple sets of issues 1 to 29  all dual language. Then restarted issues 49 to 54 Italian only, and then a final issue at number 81( Feb 2012) also Italian. I am not sure of any other issues I might be missing. All are titled Classic Camera. All are beautiful photos of the leica and a few other marks too. Issue 81 has primarily the KE-7A, French lenses of the 1800's, Zeiss lenses in M mount, and the Devin camera.

I had a subscription to the English version of Classic Camera for a short period of time.  It was a wonderful publication.  Then I got a notice from the publisher that the magazine would only be printed in Italian; my subscription stopped.  They never asked if a wanted future magazines in Italian; I would have been happy to have them even in Italian.  Instead they just walked away from many paying customers.

I was an early subscriber of Classic Camera (italian version, of course...) and have all the issues 1 to 63 : if someone is interested into, I'm  well disposed to send or scan & mail specific topics ; was a good magazine indeed.  I remember that it was on an article about the "new wave" of Net Commerce that I discovered the existence of Leicashop of Wien...

I still like 'Classic Camera Black and White', I sometimes buy it in Italy or order an issue that I like. Mauro Melchiori indeed has fascinating stories, great Leica historian. I have never been aware of an English language edition.

Hi all,

As you all seem to have old numbers of Classic Camera magazine, any of you have the issue number 71? I'm specially interested on it but I cannot buy it online, and I'm trying to get as much early Leica II documentation as possible.

Thank you and advance and stay safe,

Augusto

I've just acquired a few more issues of Classic Camera magazine - 21 to 27 (except 26). All of these are English only, not dual language. It looks like there may have been different series/issue numbers for dual language and non-dual language magazines.
