Dennis Posted January 22, 2021 Share #21 Posted January 22, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) As many said already, every lens can tell a story, right? But the 21mm, it's so storytelling 🙂 Much more than a 75mm I guess. It's about context

Mr.Prime Posted January 22, 2021 Share #23 Posted January 22, 2021 (edited) Unfortunately I don’t have the 21mm that you boys are excited about. I do have a 25mm, which I realize is not the same beast at all. My question though is about focussing and aperture. My lens is limited to f4, it has no rangefinder linkage so it’s focussed by using the distance scale on the lens and relying on a good dof. When you use your 21mm lens, how do you focus and what are typical apertures used? Edited January 22, 2021 by Mr.Prime

When you use your 21mm lens, how do you focus and what are typical apertures used? Do you have dof scale on your lens ? When I use SLR lenses (18/21/24/28), on Leica M, I just rely on those scales on manual focus lenses. I just use not too wide aperture. Tricky is my Olympus OM Zuiko 2/21 * which I used when conservative Leitz offered at same time 3.4/21 or 4/21 ! With film, I even used f/2 with pride. Side note, the S-A 4/21mm has very large and optimist dof scale, like here, see the two f/4 scale, incredible Welcome, dear visitor! Dennis Posted January 22, 2021 Share #25 Posted January 22, 2021 19 minutes ago, Mr.Prime said: When you use your 21mm lens, how do you focus and what are typical apertures used? I only use two f-stops: wide open and f/8 ... And tell you why. Wide open, in the pursuit of (like f/4 for a CV Color Skopar), when it applies, a small but welcome 3d-pop. f/8 obviously because the DoF. Very limited diffraction. Having an external 21 VF, I would use instinctively a few pre-set distances and use f/8, w/o even look at the OVF. Just use the external one for proper composition. maybe 0.7mt - 1.5mt - 5mt Remember that hyperfocal distance of a 21mm @ f/8 it's less than 2mt
Mr.Prime Posted January 22, 2021 Share #26 Posted January 22, 2021 (edited) Thanks, both of you! To be honest, I think dof scales on lenses are usually over optimistic but this is indeed where I must start. The lens I have, interestingly, has click stops on the focus ring at 1m, 1.5m, 3m and of course 0.7m & infinity. ... sorry for the off-topic continuation Edited January 22, 2021 by Mr.Prime

For example if you focus a "x" distance and you see that part of the foreground and background is in focus as you wish, and the scale tells you for example to use f/5.6, then use f/8. This extra stop always guarantee a better "optimistic" result

Guest Posted January 22, 2021 Share #29 Posted January 22, 2021 I like the 35mm for showing my grand children/people in their environment. If i use a 28mm lens i get horrible distortion like all the facebook selfies and with a 21mm i just get a cluttered mess. Like other peoples stuff with wider than 50 but the 35mm is perfect for me for people in their setting..

It’s smaller and it’s also the one used by that Turkish photographer I posted the link of. Also, the super angulon cannot be used in my sl2s without modification. Or it would scratch the sensor. Ah, I see. Yes, the 21/3.4 SEM gets great reviews. Ernst

Why not CV 21mm M f3.5? It is small and works great with SL2, FP and even on A7R III/IV...
