Chaemono Posted January 3, 2021 Share #1  Posted January 3, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) The SL2-S looks well optimized for the use with M lenses to me. It shows no vignetting and the corner performance is much better than with the S5 at f/2 in the first one with the APO 50 Summicron-M Less compressed JPEG here: https://www.smugmug.com/gallery/n-rpQ7Pb/ S5 + APO 50 Summicron-M as shot, AWB by the camera, default sharpening in LR Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted January 3, 2021 Posted January 3, 2021 Hi Chaemono, Take a look here SL2-S with M lenses. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
SrMi Posted January 3, 2021 Share #2 Â Posted January 3, 2021 I would not consider vignetting that much of quality criteria in this comparison. AFAIR, SL cameras show less vignetting than M10 cameras because SL cameras correct vignetting internally. That is not always helpful (may increase the noise in the corners).

There's also smearing in the S5 picture. The less compressed JPEGs can be downloaded.
SrMi Posted January 3, 2021 Share #4 Â Posted January 3, 2021 Just now, Chaemono said: There's also smearing in the S5 picture. The less compressed JPEGs can be downloaded. Yes, that part of analysis is definitely relevant . Thanks for testing it.
Chaemono Posted January 3, 2021 Author Share #5  Posted January 3, 2021 At f/2.8 there's still smearing in the corners with the S5. SL2S looks really good. Chaemono Posted January 3, 2021 Author Share #6  Posted January 3, 2021 So now I've corrected for vignetting in the S5 picture and adjusted WB and brightness (exposure) in both to try to match. One still has the problem of color shift in the corners with the S5. Less compressed JPEG here: https://www.smugmug.com/gallery/n-rpQ7Pb/ S5 Welcome, dear visitor! Paolou Pigini Posted January 7, 2021 Share #8 Â Posted January 7, 2021 Not only in the corners, but also along all sides the SL seems to fare better. Undoubtedly the smaller stack results in greater sharpness, but the difference is rather limited. A test on bokeh at full aperture with a fairly close subject would also be interesting. scott kirkpatrick Posted January 7, 2021 Share #9  Posted January 7, 2021 (edited) I'm glad to see you've got an S5 to compare with. Two questions. Do you know why the S5 shots at the same exposure as the SL2-S seem to turn out half a stop darker?  And do you have a more challenging lens to compare with? The 21 SEM or the 28 SX are tougher, and the 28 Summiron or Elmarit-asph ae probably the most challenging short backfocus lenses in common use. Shoot them all wide-open, of course... Lens profile still has to be selected in LR for the SL2-S for an M lens. vor einer Stunde schrieb scott kirkpatrick: And do you have a more challenging lens to compare with? The 21 SEM or the 28 SX are tougher, and the 28 Summiron or Elmarit-asph ae probably the most challenging short backfocus lenses in common use. Shoot them all wide-open, of course... 28 Summilux but it will be tough to do it focused to infinity.

scott kirkpatrick Posted January 7, 2021 Share #12  Posted January 7, 2021 I don't have an S-5, but I have checked in the past how various M lenses perform edge to edge on my SL and SL2. With the wide angles I tend to shut down one stop over what I can do with an M platform just to improve contrast and sharpen things a bit at the edges. Here's how the M 28 Summilux-asph performs on the SL2-S with a distant subject (hilltop half a km away). In our skylines, the standard reference object is the "dud shemesh" a water boiler to collect solar heated tap water for each apartment. These little white barrels are typically 40 cm in diameter and 80 cm tall. You can see them in this crop Welcome, dear visitor! farnz Posted January 8, 2021 Share #13  Posted January 8, 2021 I notice that at f/2.8 the SL2-S can gather up seagulls and conglomerate them into a single swan, which is a very impressive function. Pete.
