When working on my collections's archives, I read in the book "Lenses" by James Lager (page 113) that the production of the first Telyt 20 cm begins at serial 230001, most probably in 1934 (the lens was commercialized in 1935). And when invetigating my file "Telyt 1:4.5/20cm", I discovered I had a very good unit serialled 230255. Has somebody information on the fact this was in fact the 254th lens produced and other relevant details (Leitz production list, delivery date and to whom...)?

My earliest Telyt 200's are:

230177

230194

230204

All are from the first lot (230001-300) as is yours at 230255. Earliest I ever have reorded in 230057.  Quite a marvolous lens for 1935, expensive and relatively low pre-war production of approximately 2600. On these early lenses, the rear element protrudes beyone the thread mount and is easy to damage. The early lenses are the heaviest at 508g. Leitz slimmed down the weight later on. If anyone wants details on my 47 Telyt 200's, PM me as not many are interested in such fine details.  Matching PLOOT numbers to early serial Telyt lenses, I am attempting. I estimate about 3300 PLOOT,s were made before the war. The 400 telyt was very limited, I calculate only 187 pre war, so  one can guess that 500-800 PLOOTs were sold to non-telyt users, such as close-up and scientific.  All a work in progress.

Thank you very much for all your information, Alan. I will add that the Telyt 4.5/20cm nº230057 was mine (unfortunately, I did not take a photo). I also had, next to the nº230255, seven more : 272111, 472648, 582106, 677237, 768017, 768288 and 768630. The last ones date 1950, and Jean-Claude Braconi says above that some were produced as late as 1957; Lager confirms it was last catalogued in 1959.

As for the PLOOT, I had what I believe is a prototype (?) and thirteen "real" ones, twelve having been registered with their serial : 1232, 1821, 2516, 4226, 4242, 4810, 5069, 5344, 5498, 5834, 5861, and 7257. The earliest I had, nº1232, was with fixed magnifier and without carrying eyelets nor accessory shoe. If I remember good, the one for which I do not have serial was unnumbered.

I join some more illustrations, starting with a photo I took in Italy in the collection of Ghester Sartorius, but the lagend is lost (to date...). Following are two photos of my "prototype", and one - communicated by a friend collector - said to illustrate second (?) protoytype. And finally, just for pleasure, the EMTOO leather case I had complete with PLOOT, Telyt, twin cable release and two filters.

And, very final point : all my friendly wishes for a 2021 better than the just closed one.

This thread has switched on my attention towards the old Telyt 20cm (I have a postwar one in the 1.xxx.xxx ....) and surfed a little to see what can be found... and discovered that people don't hesitate to try to sell items that, by the other way, are well detailed... 😁

Just the sort of thing I would consider buying, for the challenge of trying to get a picture out of it.

I bought this ,aged 20, with no idea what I did 1979 in Budapest. Especially no suggestions about the  probably self made magnifier? But the PLOOT seems to be very early.

Can you confirm the serial number, is it 1032 or could it be 7032? If 1032, perhaps the accessory shoe and mirror collar lock were added at a later date.  If 7032 perhaps the bayonet viewer mount was modified to accept an earlier fixed type viewer. The size of the condenser logo on the side appears to be the larger one used after about serial 1800, again a possibility this is a later ploot.

I have one within the production of first lot, 230290 perhaps made in 1934.  I love to take B&W pictures with this vintage lens and M246 so much!

I have two 200mm f4.5 Telyts, 898494 and 1366853. I had an earlier one 272950 which I sold.

I now have this one, 272473 with a polished brass front end.

Hi thanks for letting me join this group.

I am a long time Nikon User over 40 years, um (almost 50 years) that loves Nippon Kogaku early lenses, but has found the joy of Leica 1930 lenses, I love the weight the feel in the hand the brass showing thru the black paint and the images I have produced.

The 7.3cm f1.9 is my favorite lens followed by the 200cm f4 that is very sharp and the Elmar 9cm f4 Fat or thin.

I enclose a image taken with the 20cm today it was made in 1934 and is number 54 of the first 300 made.

I also enclose a image taken with the 9cm f4 Elmar this S/N 2200XX, this image was taken looking into the bright sunlight and is a image I love so don't be to hard on me.

I also have a 9cm f4 thin Elmar S/N 260000 the S/N list show they started 260001 is this correct or did they start with 0.

Best Regards, Rob.
