Ongoing hardware upgrades??

Both of mine have been back. The November original was fixed for me while I was on the German trip. The service department bent over backwards to fix and return it to me while I was still in Country. Kudos

The second body had a pretty serious rangefinder problem which I lived with while the first body was being updated. I left the body on my return to the states. Two months later I received the body and it was as near perfect as I could determine.

They also repaired several lenses while I was there and one, the 90 cron, remains in Solms over two months later awaiting a part.

All in all not too bad considering it is summer

Only had mine since January, but it's not been back. It's easy to get the impression from reading messages here that every camera has problems. That isn't the case.

I know that, Steve, but there seem to be hundreds of examples that have been returned to the mother-ship for TLC.

Maybe all of the returnee parents choose to tell their stories here, while all of the happy campers keep schtum, 'cos they only have positive stories to tell...

Mine's gone back today together with several lenses to have it's back focusing fixed. As far as I can tell it's a combination of near object rangefinder error and to a varying degree back focusing lenses. I've had the camera since january.

Steve, this one wasn't sent back because of problems; it was sent in to be engraved. I remarked that there seems to be an upgrade since January. It is interesting to note that Leica does indeed upgrade their M8's. It gives raise to hopes of an upgrade service, should there be any significant advance in sensor technology.

Re those that have an un-upgraded November camera. I had one too and decided to have it upgraded. I can only recommend it, the camera became even better, despite the fact that is was without major problems.

@jaap

"Elektrischer Umbau" means "electrical modification".

I asked a Leica technician about this when my M8 was there two weeks ago. He told me they were replacing a transistor. Some of the old transistors have caused trouble, so they change them when they get the camera to Solms. Seems to have to do with SDS.

Would have appreciated him saying "well, now that we have this wonderful full frame sensor, we thought you might like it in your M8".... ;-)

Regards

Stefan

Does anyone own an M8 that hasn't been back to base in its first year of life?

Mine (a December 2006 M8 purchase) has 6000+ exposures and has not shown me any problems. One lens went back under passport, but that was because an old-style shallow back cap had put scratches on the rear element of a new ASPH lens. No charge, but it took a while to get back to me, largely due to Leica USA's policy of saying nothing when there is a shipping problem -- it was up to me to find where things were stuck.

Incidentally, we must be close to 20,000 units sold in 2006 and 2007 (evidence from serial number discussions), so i am sure that the bugs are being quietly squeezed out, one by one. If I can get my hands on one of the latest shipping models, I would like to compare its handling with my own, untouched since December. I can't blame Leica for being close-mouthed about what they have fixed and how the fixes are achieved. It makes business sense, but it doesn't have to stop us from doing a little detective work to find out.

Uh-oh, Scott--Don't go giving Mark any ideas! ;)

One of M8s is a Nov 1.06 and has al ways worked flawlessly. I have no plans to up grade it. The second M8 has always had problems and is upgraded to the new firmware.

My M8 arrived this morning back from solms after focus checking with the 28, Nocti & 75 Cron. No detail was given in the documentation to the electronic update, so that part still remains a mystery. However and Carsten will be pleased to hear this, the scroll wheel seems a lot smother. Gone is the stickyness, nice and smooth now. I did not mention it in the initial service request but I'm positive there is an improvement in operation.

Just as a side note, in the camera box were 2 screen protectors in a ziplock bag, nice touch. and very welcome.;)

Hmm, maybe I should send mine in, finally. I am afraid of losing my rangefinder adjustment and black point, but the scroll wheel really bothers me sometimes, and my buttons seem to be going crazy more often at the moment.

Mine too - especially on the Set menu. My scroll wheel is also getting sticky.
