How to upload images: Prepare the image as follows: 1.   The image should be sRGB and 8-bits 2.   Reduce the size to 2048 pixels on the longest side. (smaller sizes can be set, but are not recommended) 3.   Sharpen properly for screen. 4.   Save as JPG to your desktop, reducing JPG quality to produce 2000 kB (5000 kB for sponsoring members). 5.   In Lightroom these parameters should be set in the Export dialog. 6.   In the Forum posting or editing box, click “choose Files” and s

Ngala Game Reserve S Africa-  on a morning walk along a dry river bed we came across a small family group of Elephants crossing. We sat down & watched from a safe distance, then.....see image in next post

A young teenager who was lagging behind came charging down the river bank at us.

Normally at this age it's only a mock charge, as he tries to test boundaries (like all teenagers). I shouted at him & he stopped 😅 & then went on to join the rest of his group.

Very pleasing pictures, Mike, since the news channels seem to be filled with the plight of elephants through poaching and floppy trunk syndrome so it's really gratifying to see a picture of a nuclear family of healthy elephants in the wild. 

Nice anecdote about the bolshy teenager too.  Do you think he might have been assuming the role of dominant male in the absence of the bull elephant?

Thanks Pete. It is really gratifying to see stable Elephant populations in the wild.  

West & Central African Forest Elephants have been hammered hard by poaching, as well as some East African Elephant populations. There's been a massive decline in elephant numbers over the past 20 years, all poaching related. 

The situation in East Africa seems to have stabilised, touch wood. Southern African elephant populations are relatively stable & on the whole have been spared the slaughter witnessed elsewhere in Africa.

He was definitely pushing his luck in the absence of a big bull, these teenagers wind their necks in very quickly when the big bulls are around. Again, not too dissimilar to human teenagers....😂

His ears are still extended so I assume he still has some aggression inside although he's stopped his charge so he's uncertain.  

I can imagine a thought-bubble above his head with: "Oh.  ... Well, this is embarrassing ...". 

(Nothing wrong with a bit of anthropomorphism now and then I always think. ^_^)
