Shows alternate frame lines so one can preview different composition without having to mount lenses of varying focal length. The M262 omitted the lever, as I recall.

thanks, its an aid for novice photographers then.

Seriously though most of us know without a preview lever dont we?

Often debated here.  Some like it, despite experience; others think it’s a waste. Enough so that Leica took it away and reintroduced it, presumably based on feedback (even though weather sealing has become more of a design priority). But, yes, experienced users generally are good at getting close without aid, especially given that M framing is imprecise anyway and dependent on distance to subject, different frame line distance optimization on various M models, etc. Heck, we’re the same group that still can’t figure out what lens or bag to use.

You can even disable the movie function in the menu.
But of course it's more exciting to buy a new camera to get rid of it;-)

Ok, learnt something new. In the normal menu there is no option for that. Found it in the menu that comes up when you press the set-button. You can set video recording to "off" and then the movie button is disabled.

i also bought a M9, replaced it with an M240 and then i replaced the M240 again with a M9.

the only reason for this step: i was not satisfied with des results of the M240, i couldn't manage the colours. Now with M9 i am quite satisfied, although i still prefer using film.
I don't know M10 - maybe this the best camera.

Leitna,

concerning M10 the best camera, my opinion

as M10 user from early 2017, I don't think so.

At first I saw it as "ultimate digital M" combining film M size and some digital features.

M10 is NOT the best M ( or camera ! ) for me , I still use some other Ms like Monochrom, M246 or even film M 😉 to "complete M10"...

For me it was the other way round. I first tested the M9 and was not happy with it. Glad I don't buy it. Then the M 240 came out and the most important disadvantages of the M9 for me was solved. I bought it at once and never regret it. For my needs the M 240 is the best digital M, so I bought a M-P 240 in addition.
No idea why the M 240 is so unpopular.

I have the 240p and I know I'll upgrade some day but I'll hold on to it for all the benefits listed above.  I had an M9 and sometimes miss it even though it was the most fidgety and quirky camera I've ever owned.  I'm sure it was my example and I can not count the number of times I had to turn the camera on & off and/or remove the battery and SD card just to bring it back to life.  Having said that, I can understand the OP's decision.

Well, I really not to  surprise that when I start this 21 hrs ago  I would get so many diversified  and different opinions  as to  the likes and dislike of a very popular camera. I want to-thank  those who agree with me that  the 240  suck,  and also I want to  thank  this that don't 🙃

Hav a nice day😉

I suspect if you had posted this in the M9 forum, it would have been received a little differently 😛. It’s hard enough just finding gear that you can fall in love with - then comes  all the opinions on why you shouldn’t. I, for one, am happy for you.

No doubt about it, good point and thank you for your  kind response

Sorry to be late in this topic, but I am with fotomas: my first digital m was a M9, during approx. 1 year, then had an opportunty with a M-P 240. I am happier with the latter, for some reasons already explained (battery life, for exemple) and mainly because I spend less time on post processing. I find white balance and exposure far more reliable with the M240. Sometimes, in a series of photos (same subject, same time) I had inconsistencies in colors with the M9. I don’t think that my M9 was defective.

 MP240

1. Electronic finder  EVF Delay

2.No preview lever

3.Didn't need camera to  take movies

4. When trying to pick up camera for quick shots sometime lost the ability to respond and lost the shot.

1. Moot point since M9 can't compete. If this really bothered you you'd go for M10 not M9.

2. Incorrect. M240-P has the lever as others pointed out.

3. Yes. But luckily you can disable the Movie recording button and it won't bother you no more. It's a minorly unaesthetic little pimple on the body.

4. Yes this, absolutely. I have got burned myself on several occasions to this same little issue. The camera goes to a shallow sleep first, then after a few minutes to a deeper slumber and now it needs a second or two to wake up. Slightly irritating, agreed. M9 has some nice features I'd like to have seen on M240, such as quick trigger for instance.

----

Overall I am in the camp of M240(-P) lovers. Love the color, love the quieter shutter, love the improved technics/rangefinder accuracy. No denying that a silver M9-P is the prettiest digital Leica M with framelines illuminated using natural light, that's the real shizzle yeah. Even in the ISO department M240 falls apart pretty quickly after ISO 3200 so M9's lower capabilities don't come far.

My main reservation wrt M9 is the supposedly poorer rangefinder mechanism that drifts out of tune more easily than later models. I like my rangefinders accurate and not needing to send them to Wetzlar every 2 years.

Looking forward to seeing the shots you post with your M9, Hank.  Whether it's something nostalgic, something humorous, or just some fresh young tarts, you have an unfailing eye for capturing great, interesting photos.

Disturbingly, my 11 year old M9 is starting to do this more regularly. It's never been a problem until a couple of years ago, when a battery error appeared and it seemed to stop the camera. I took out the battery and cleaned the terminals as best I could, and it seemed fine after that. But since then, my M9 freezes every now and again, usually when taking a protracted series of images, and I have to take out the battery to unfreeze it. Not sure if it is a certain battery, or if it is the camera.

M240 prices are at an all time low, and secondhand SLs are similar money. I might make a move in that direction if the M9 becomes more unreliable, as much as it would pain me to do so.

Whenever I pick the camera up, I press the shutter half way and when the camera is at eye level, it is fully awake, no matter how long it was asleep. Wakeup time is around 1sec. You can switch off power saving if you are faster than that.

If you develop that finger instinct you're golden. I sometimes lose the instinct as I juggle between cameras. Not a big deal, many other cameras have similar wake up delays and photographers develop these habits.

Have you considered keeping your M9 and buying a 240?  Dealers are listing 240s in the $3,000 range.

The M-P 240 is my favourite digital M camera. Sold my M10 and got the 240 back again.
Unfortunately its now in Wetzlar for a repair; it had horizontal lines in the external EVF caused most likely by a faulty IC board in the camera.

... and my favourite analogue M is of course the M3 as I am a 50mm shooter.
