A begonia plant in our house caught a narrow shaft of sunlight this afternoon. It only lasted for a minute.

I've never liked the fragrance of begonias, partly because every late autumn my mother would unearth all her begonias and have me wriggle into the crawl space beneath our home to hang the plants roots up for the winter, where it was dark, dry and warm.  I have no idea if this was horticulturally sound, or perhaps her just getting even with me for bringing chicken pox into our home when I was 5.

My father would do the same for the geraniums he planted in window boxes and the tuberous begonias in hanging baskets.  His percentage of overwintering was quite good considering the temperatures back then were much colder than now, and the cubbyhole was a crawl space beneath the porch accessible from the basement.
