Dear All,

I am looking to add a 3x ND filter to my Summilux pre-ASPH E43 v.2 (Filterthread 0.5mm instead of the usual 0.75mm). What are the possibilities to a) find one and b) attach one?

  • I also have the lens cap 12504, which seems to have some different filter thread, though I am not sure of the diameter.
  • I have a Leica E43 UV filter on the lens, but I see no offerings for ND filters. I investigated if a step-up ring E43 (0.5mm thread) to 46 (0.75mm) was available, but no. Also Heliopan does not manufacture custom-ordered adapter rings anymore.

Thank you for for any advice.

Thank you John, the main question is whether the 43mm filter thread has the thinner 0.5mm pitch (no longer produced) or the normal 0.75mm (common). If it has the common thread this cannot be used on this particular lens...

Why would you want a x3 neutral density filter?

Just stop the lens down a couple of stops or if you are using a digital camera wind the iso down if you really need to use the lens wide open.

Most importantly, I like the wide open look of Leica lenses even in strong light. But additionally I have a Leica M9 with beginnings of corrosion. Stopping the lens down would reveal this.

Mr. Karbe has given the order never to step down a Leica lens if it is not necessary to achieve more depth of focus.
Comments like yours give ample evidence that some users are not up to Leica’s standards. The next instance of this kind of misuse will lead to immediate confiscation of the perpetrator’s lens.

I think you mean depth of field, not focus.

Depth of field is in front of the lens, in the field. Depth of focus is at the film/sensor plane.

Anyway, i would rather follow Mr Berek than Mr Karbe.

Use the 12504 lens hood, it is made for series 7 but will also take 49mm B+W filters. They slip in and work well. I do have trouble with an off brand infrared filter 49mm whose filter ring is too fat.

Thank you so much for this suggestion.

So would a 49mm filter from B+W just screw in between the two parts of the 12504 lens cap and still allow the sun cap piece to be used? https://www.owy.ch/produkte/filter/graufilter/803-nd-0-9/b-w-803-grau-filter-nd-0-9-mrc-nano-xs-pro-digital-49mm.html

For my clarification, is such 49mm filter fixed/stable between the two parts of the lens hood and also it does not impact vignetting? I was just wondering how it works based on the statement that Series 7 which I understand are larger (52mm) would still fit. Thanks again.

The Series 7 filter is around 50mm, the 49mm filter doesn't use its threads it just slips in. While the threads are 49mm there is a slight variance in the diameter of the metal ring holding the glass, this is what slips into the lens hood. Works best upside down with the threads up. The lens hood has an opening of over 50mm (sorry I don't have a good metric ruler, I'm in the US).

My 0.5 pitch Leica UV/IR E43 filter (13417) has an internal thread allowing to stack regular 0.75 pitch Leica E43 filters with no problem at all. Perhaps the internal thread pitch is 0.75mm in that UV/IR filter i don't know but i don't need to force at all. Did you try to stack ND filters with your UV filter this way?

I have been using B+W filters on the Lux v2  E43 without any issues: the screwed in easily enough and as soon as I felt a resistance I stopped, and they stayed on securely. Being really worried about ruining the thread I repeatedly inspected it and it was flawless. I always kept a clear protector on and removed it if I needed the ND 0.9 on.

Dear All,

Thank you for all replies.

- I made a mistake in my post: the Leica hood is 12586 and not 12504 (my lenses were with Leica for adjustment and could not remember - from the Internet they looked the same).

- The 12586 does not unscrew (at least I cannot unscrew it, I tried), but seems to have an innner filter thread too. Could ND filters be screwed in here, if so which size and thread?

- My UVa E43 filter on the Summilux 50mm lens has the number 13206. It does not have an internal filter thread to attach other filters. Also this E43 size is to small to use for the filter thread in the hood (the filter goes through it) - as I was thinking the advice by Thorsten Overgaard was to use normal 43 filters.

Would you have more experience with the hood 12586?

Thank you in advance.

The 12586 hood has no internal filter thread sorry. It is made to be used with the 13206 filter which has a special groove for it.

Thanks - I was wondering what exactly does Thorsten Overgaard mention in this article https://www.overgaard.dk/leica-50mm-Summilux-M-ASPH-f-14-APO.html in the section "How to mount a filter on the Leica 50mm Summilux-M ASPH f/1.4 Black Chrome or any other 1959 non-ASPH version"?

Does it mean the 12586 can accept a normally pitched 43mm filter (with some tolerance)?

The hoods Thorsten sells have a filter thread built in. The hood for lenses with a 39mm thread have a 46mm filter thread. You will need to check the specific hood you need  yourself, don't rely on answer here.

Sure, at the same time  in the paragraph I quoted he mentions explicitly the 12586.
