Head and shoulders bokeh is better done with correct placement of sitter according to background and light. f5.6 will do the person portrait, then. @f14 with lens, RF misalignment or miss-focus, it might became the portrait of the nose tip.

Also, it is third page and we still don't know which camera and which versions of lenses we are talking about.

Sorry, I recently acquired a Leica M10 R and the 35 mm Summicrom. I will be buying using new lenses. In a strange twist, my wife really does not like me buying second hand camera gear and always encourages me to go new!

If you need to be shooting at f1.4 you will need a Summilux. Otherwise a Summicron will be a wiser choice.

I never buy lenses by needs, but because of their rendering, bokeh, size, shape, tactile feel etc. And I let my heart decide.

These two quotes sum up the two strands of decision making thinking. So the decision basically depends on how you want to decide. Head versus heart. All choices of 50mm lenses from Leica will be good ones though.

I have participated in many similar threads and I usually feel quite alone with my opinions. I find it rather strange, however, that everyone else seems to choose photographic equipment solely on the basis of rational needs. Shouldn't there be any room for passion?

Why do you assume others don't choose equipment for irrational reasons? I, for one, have acquired a great many items of photographic equipment just for the sheer fun of having - and using - them but this approach might not be the most helpful angle if considered as an answer to the OP's original question.

If I had asked others for help when I was starting to buy my photo equipment, I probably would never have bought anything of what I have had or have today. Who would recommend a beginner to buy a Noctilux or a Summilux – or a Leica camera at all? Rationally speaking, everything I own is completely unnecessary.

Therefore I say if someone asks: Follow your heart, because no one else knows your innermost intentions.

No one here buys equipment solely based on their need. Nobody would buy Leica equipment then.

Some things are desirable for what they are, for what they represent, for who owned them and for many other irrational reasons. I for one do not have a problem with this and along with pippy, I own stuff which may, or more probably may not, get used. Every so often I go through a phase of rationality and dispose of some of the items which have become less appreciated with owning them. But some photographic equipment is intrinsically well designed, beautifully made and is 'easy on the eye' too, so whether its used or not it is pleasant to have around.

It is good she is willing to afford it :). Think about Visoflex, if you are after H&S portraits @1.4. It is another 600+ USD on top of the thousands for Leica made 50 1.4.

Thanks. if only she paid for it all too 😉

I'm trading my Fuji gear for the 21 F3.4 and therefore need some viewfinder help. I am leaning towards the Visoflex over the specific 21mm finder for a few reasons; price, use on all lens, other features such as GPS tagging. I think I'll probably order one after a little more research.

Good idea for EVF. UWA and f1.4 on 50mm lens are two big reasons.  Just be ready for the real Leica.

There is no real need for something else than the viewfinder when you use the 21mm unless you have well defined motived that have to be put very exactly into the frame. I am a landscape and travel photographer and I use the 21 3.4 quite a lot. But I just estimate what is outside the 28mm lines that I see. When you mount the 21mm the camera shows you the 28mm framelines. With some experience you know how much more the 21mm gives you. That is how I do it as I do not want to use a Visoflex.

. . . However, my priority is a w/a so my lovely Fuji gear if off for trade in today and I have a 21 f3.4 on order.

Then comes the 50.

Best wishes, David

Hi David, when money and/or wheight are not the initial drivers then I would certainly go for f/1.4. Just a detail to note: the black 50mm model is much lighter than the silver one. Unfortunately I have the heavy silver one and because of its weight I decided to buy an additional 50mm and I choose the f/2.5 Summarit just before they withdrew it from market. Its wonderfully light and its sharpness is absolutely excellent. For me its a wonderfull light weight lens for hiking etc together with my 28mm Summicron. But I am aware that once light gets lesser in the evening then you are very happy with f/1.4. For these instances I have 2 Summilux: The 35mm and the 50mm.

You are not alone 🎶 (Michael Jackson). I would advise David to go for the Summilux 75. He can explain to his wife that this an expensive enough lens to feel as new and it is unique. The 50lux’s bokeh is nothing compared to this 75. The Summicron 50 is not that special, so if David has to rethink this all he could in the mean time do very well with the Elmar-M 50/2.8 which is the best M lens for it’s price.

Why?

He's specifically asking about a 50mm lens.

Why on Earth do you suggest a lens with a focal-length 50% longer than that being asked about? A lens which hasn't even been in production for 13 years and a lens which just happens to be one of the New Darlings in the world of 'The Collectors' and which has the price-ticket to match?

The OP is just entering the world of Leica for the first time. Give him a break.

Philip.
