Personally the only time I used an IR cut filter was on an M8 for taking shots in colour. The M8 was famous for purple looking black clothes etc, so much so that Leica actually gave 2 IR filters away to M8 owners, BUT.... You are asking about B&W photography and again, I used my M8 mostly for B&W until I got an M9M. There is no way on this earth I would add an IR cut filter to any other camera for any other purpose than to shoot colour on an M8

I'm sure I will be corrected but Im pretty sure that most, if not all, newer digital cameras already have an IR cut built onto the sensor covering, so adding another is not advised personally, others may offer you a different opinion but for me, the IR filter adds nothing to a B&W image.

The M8 produces wonderful B&W JPGs and the fact that the camera has a lot of IR leak adds a 'glow' to the B&W images, that is something I personally really like about the M8

Costa, I think that you've seen this thread ...B&W with M8

Over time, I used M8 without UV/IR filter even with color pics.

As I used mostly (99.99%) of time DNG, I could choose "color or b&w" at home.

Kind of saying that UV/IR filters were not used.

M8 IS a very good IR camera as is.

Out of topic ...

But when I use IR pass (minus visible light) with M8, that began to be fun again.

Sometimes, good surprise with b&w jpg from M8, like here,

Never removed IR-cut filters from my M8.2 even for B&W pics which had more crispness this way i felt but maybe it's just me (M8.2, Elmar-M 50/2.8).

Hi guys

I've read conflicting views on whether to keep the IR cut filter on for B&W or not. What's the general consensus?  Does it make any significant difference?

Many thanks

Yes it makes a difference. Leaving the IR filter off will give a different tonal curve which some users appreciate, but there will be some loss of acuity, as the IR light will be out of focus on non-APO lenses.

Have to admit I forgot to put the IR blocking filter on when I went out. Color image is in the M8 Image thread.
