Confusing 50 et 75mm frame lines / feature request

Hello,

I mainly use a 50mm lens on my M10P but I find it confusing to compose : the 75mm frame lines are so close to the 50mm lines that it fills the frame with disturbing lines. Also, the led frame lines are very bright, which make them even more confusing.

Am I the only one to be disturbed ? I was not confused with the frame lines of the M8, and even less with those of the M2 (very simple viewfinder for 35-50-90 lenses only).

Is there a way to decrease the brightness of the frame lines ?

Would a firmware update allow us to select if we want multiple frame lines to be displayed or just the frame lines for the lens actually mounted on the camera ? Actually I think that would be a great feature as the frame lines are now led-lit, so they should be able to change that.

Do you know how it can be suggested to leica ?

Thank you.

The frame lines are mechanical. Firmware has no control over them.

Yes I understand that the detection and the lever are mechanical but what is displayed is now electronic (led), isn't it ?

So couldn't there be a firmware update allowing you to choose if the viewfinder displays the frame lines in pairs or just single frame lines ? Or even an "auto frame line" function which would allow the camera to only display the frame lines corresponding to the 6-bit code of the lens mounted.. Or a "manual frame lines" allowing the user to manually select which frame lines he wants to see in the viewfinder..?

No, the lines are illuminated now by led, rather than via natural light through a front window, but the masks are still mechanically controlled.

Thank you Jeff. Are you sure that the M10 frame lines still use this mask ? The article refers to the M8, where frame lines were not led-lit.

No. Only the light source that illuminates the frame line is powered by led instead of natural light. The frame lines are still mechanical.

Ok, thank you for this explanation.

Is there a way to dim the leds that light the frame lines ? Is that the finder brightness setting in the menu ?

I don’t believe so. I think you can change them to red.

Leica used to have a. service that. blocked out the 75 mm. framelines. I don't know whether they still offer the modification.

Hello,

Do you know if the 75mm could be blocked after the camera leaves the factory or did it have to be ordered "à la carte" ? Thanks

Out of curiosity and looking at the photo of the frameline mask, what exactly can cause the framelines to become stuck for a specific focal length on older cameras? My M7 is stuck with framelines for a 35mm lens ..... but if I rotate the lens barrel back and forth for a few minutes, the 35mm frameline disappears and the 50mm simultaneously reappears. If I then take off the lens or play with the framelines preview lever, I have to start again with the 35mm frameline !

I was a customer service modification.

You could try a M3 or M2 or  M4. 😀

For several years I used the 35 and 75 mm combo of lenses on my M10 and only mounted the 50 mm lens on the Monochrom. It always took a moment to adjust to using the correct frame lines. But then, since I only used one camera at a time, the unneeded frame lines seemed to become invisible... or at least ignorable.

Currently I use the 75 mm lens mounted on a SL and the 35 on the M10. Seems to have solved the visual confusion.

To quote myself from a nearby frameline thread:

The frameline lever is just one part of a very complex frame-setting mechanism with multiple overrides powered by springs or finger pressure.

The lever will (temporarily) override the mounted lens - but springs will also override the lever when it is released, to hand back control of framing to the lens flange.

This also occurs in the foil-thin metal viewfinder masks themselves, which are moved one direction by the lens or the lever, but will spring back to the "35/135" setting if no lens is mounted and the front lever is not pushed (as well as force the frames to "follow" the focus mechanisn for parallax correction at different distances)

At any rate, the springs actually in the viewfinder are very small and delicate hairsprings. It does not take much dust or grease or stress-bending in storage to lock them up and lead to "half-and-half" framelines. With the M6 and later cameras, Leica added a "centering spring" with detents, that is supposed to force the frames to "snap" to one position or another rather than stick halfway in between - but it too can get gummed up.
