TL2 with Nikon 300mm PF via Novoflex SL/NIK adapter . . .

My m. i. C. Nikon to Leica M adapter almost literally fell apart yesterday.  Although I am not usually one to muck around with grossly overpriced components, I was already miffed a bit at the poor performance of the SL/NIK adapter on the SL; and disappointed that it could not be used as a passive adapter on either the T or TL2.

So I cut a tiny strip of cellophane tape, put it over the SL/NIK adapter's contacts, and mounted it on my TL2.  Although the right dial was uselessly assigned to control aperture in aperture priority mode (hopefully no more than a firmware oversight), it worked!  The camera allowed light to both the LCD and EVF.

Figuring this arrangement might help wake-up time and battery life in the SL, and also concerned that repeated use of the cellophane might damage my TL2's contacts, I did some surgery on the adapter, completely removing the contacts and printed wire that connects them to PCB.  Strangely, the right dial still defaulted to control aperture (it defaults to ISO when the M-Adapter-T is attached).  But otherwise it worked just fine.  I have yet to try it on my SL.

Best of all, the entire setup--camera, evf, adapter, lens (~450mm AOV@f/4) and filter--weighs in at a neck-friendly 1350 grams!  If I can figure out how to get the right dial back to ISO, it'll be perfect. But even if I can't, it's still a setup that I'll have a lot of fun using.

Rob, this is really an amazing shot. I also do have a Nikkor 300 mm; but the old and manual version. I made a few (hand held) tests some time ago and was very pleased with the IQ I could get. But as I am very lazy to take a tripod and focusing of 300 on T is not an easy task, I am not using this lens much. When I see your shot, I think I should do more! :)

As for the adapter, I am using Novoflex and never had any problem what so ever. As I was told by Novoflex people, I am always closing the blue ring on the adapter to maximum, and only use the lens aperture ring.

Louis, by your description I assume you're using the Novoflex LET/NIK, which is the model I wish I'd gotten in the first place.  The only problem with the SL/NIK model for me was the electronics, which I gutted.  Fit is perfect and reassuring, especially after the experience I had with the analog made-in-China adapter.

As for the 300mm phase fresnel lens, it is tiny at around <150mm long and ~760 grams in weight, not needing a tripod.  The only catch is the electronic aperture, but since the lens is already at full performance at maximum aperture, I shoot it wide open all the time anyway.  T/TL/TL2 sensors, which have no AA filter, are perfect to exploit the lens for maximum  detail, making the combination a joy to use.

Rob, I think this is how my Novoflex adapter is called. But of course, it doesn't have any electronic connection with the camera. I think only Leica lenses with Leica adapter have the electronic connection.

It seems we are not talking about the same lens. As you can see below, my old Nikkor 300 mm (via Novoflex) is really not very practical for manual focusing! LOL

Beautiful.  It's incredible that you're finding all these beautiful birds in SIngapore - or is this somewhere else?

Sunbirds I post here are always shot in Singapore.  They are easy to find at Gardens by the Bay, either side of the marina, and with some patience can become confiding enough to fill a nice portion of the frame at 280mm.

Some of the different birds I posted a while back were in Western AU.
