Reid Reviews (reidreviews.com) has a number of articles on this very topic, and they are definitely not equivalent in image quality.  The micro lenses over the sensor on the SL and SL2 give it a significant advantage in corner sharpness in particular when using M lenses.

I tested this side by side (Summicron 35 on Z6 and SL2-S) and found the same.
