Gelatino Posted October 21, 2020 Share #1 Posted October 21, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, For those who use a soft release on their M, and have lost one or more (one for me) in the past time, here is an idea to avoid next loss, with a cheap, easy to perform device and not invasive as sticking . Get a silicon hose of diameter 5 or 6 mm and cut a 3mm thick ring to set round the soft release thread. Done. I got the hose from an expresso machine that was out of order, but a O-ring of right size may do the job as well. Welcome, dear visitor! Ecar Posted October 21, 2020 Share #2 Posted October 21, 2020 But doesn't the soft release become "less soft"?

Thinking for over 30s is a challenge for me, JD. Fortunately, I looked at the picture again and it took much less than that to understand. Phew! Apologies for the stupid question. I'll look closer next time.
Mikep996 Posted October 23, 2020 Share #5 Posted October 23, 2020 (edited) I purchased a pair of Chinese-made (black aluminum) soft releases on Ebay for less than 10 bucks including shipping. Received them in a few days. They came with tiny silicone o-rings. So apparently they figured out this "problem." Yes, they work just as well as a $40 Leica soft release... martinot Posted October 23, 2020 Share #6 Posted October 23, 2020 (edited) I started out with some cheap generic chinese JJC branded soft release, and they work well (also came with a pair of black small o-rings). But I did not like that the metal/silver versions did not match the colour of the shutter on my Leica camera. Also tried some other soft releases, but never found a good colour match. Finally I relented and bought an original Leica soft release (Leica Soft Release Button "LEICA", 12 mm, Chrome, Type 14015) and this matches the camera perfectly. So happy now! I can only speak for myself, so it stops my index finger 'stabbing' at the shutter release button. A soft release sits proud of the shutter button and allows me to press down with the fleshy underside of my finger between the first and second knuckles, which means I can operate the shutter release more gradually and smoothly than I can with the tip of my finger. Smoother release = less camera movement = ability to shoot at slower shutter speeds with less risk of motion blur. Pete.

Can’t say they make any difference for me, though many swear by them. Tried them for a while, but after numerous flat batteries (activating the camera when in the bag) decided they are better off in the junk drawer...;-)
lanetomlane Posted November 11, 2020 Share #10 Posted November 11, 2020 I once had a problem with a soft release on an M9 Monochrom, and was about to send the camera back to the mothership for repair. As soon as I got the camera (before taking a picture) I put a Chinese soft release on the camera and noticed that I couldn't get the mid-position on the shutter release, in order to check exposure and then re-compose. The shutter would release straight away. At the same time I had the regular M9 with a Leica soft release and never had a problem. It was in the pub after a Leica meeting in Bristrol that I was bitching and moaning about the fault (yes, me) and saying I was fed-up with the camera and would be sending it back to Germany the following week. Rober Parker suggested I remove the soft release, problem solved. I can only think the Chinese release was a little too long and was activating the shutter without allowing me to go into the mid-position. I bought a second Leica one and have been happy ever since. I do like the soft release as I feel it enables me to handhold the camera at lower speeds. Anybody want to buy a Chinese soft release. but no guaratees. 😇 https://photographybytomlane.com
Stephen.s1 Posted November 11, 2020 Share #11 Posted November 11, 2020 (edited) Amazon just delivered a pack of soft releases. Nine of them... Three each of flat, concave and convex. Black, silver and red. $12,00 delivered. I find that the one i chose: flat, and black, does make snapping a shot a tad smoother.
