Any current thread on this issue with the SL2? Even with 75% battery I am not being allowed to shoot high speed bursts or video by this SL2 and I did find an external blog about this issue.. looks like Leica is working towards finding a solution.. this is such a terrible flaw though..

another question, on another note, is the SL battery grip (HG-SCL4) compatible with the SL2 body?

I have been shooting some video footage with M lenses on my SL2 . When shooting 4k 60fps the ¨lack of power ¨ message appears when the batterie is 25% more or less. This was with the old firmware. Yesterday I updated and will try again...I´ll let you know.

SL2 reuses SL battery. I think that it is a terrible idea.
Panasonic S1R is using a battery with almost 50% more capacity.

Well, it saves money and makes spares available for most of the customers.  The Panasonic lenses hit the battery warning at 75% of capacity, while Leica's lenses don't get warned until 25% of capacity.  I take that to mean that the Panasonic lenses draw more current out of theL mount than Leica planned for.  I also have the 70-200 2.8, so this is a bit disappointing.

That’s exactly the problem. SL2 did not use proper battery for L-mount alliance ! What a shame.

At 250$ a piece it is an issue.
Saving parts may not be that economical at all. Some users found that using two batteries with the battery grip solved the problem.
Isn’t that more cumbersome and expensive for the users ?

As someone who has not encountered this battery problem (I only use L-mount lenses) I am happy the SL2 uses the same batteries as the SL - save me buying a new set of spares.
I would have been annoyed if Leica had used another battery.

Has Sigma fp got the same issue with Panasonic lenses ?
fp is using the same small battery as Leica CL & Q

Have the FP, love the thing .. only used it with Sigma 45 & M lenses so far..

But it EATS batteries

I have the thing set to all the most aggressive power setting modes in terms of LCD off/sleep/etc and it reminds me of the Sony A7 series in the early days haha

On the plus side it has in-camera USB-C charging so I keep a cable plugged in my car for when I find myself in need on the go

I have an update.. tested with every L mount option I have.. here are the results

>> Setup that DO NOT display “not enough power” issue with 50% battery left

1. Leica 24-90

2. Leica S 120 with S adapter L

3. Voigtlander 40mm f1.2 with novoflex M adapter

4. Leica Telyt-R 350mm f4.8 with novoflex R adapter

5. Leica 11-23mm TL lens

>> Setup that DOES exhibit “not enough power” issue with 50% battery left

1. Panasonic S Pro 70-200 f2.8

2. Canon 11-24mm f4 with Sigma MC-21 adapter

3. Sigma 105mm f1.4

so, based on my tests, it looks like all non-Leica electronic adapters will have this issue.. now, does that mean these third parties are the ones that needs firmware updates to their lenses or adapters? 😊

"non-Leica electronic adapters will have this issue"

What is meant by the above statement? The L Mount lenses are not mounted via an adapter.

Are you saying that all non-Leica lenses that you've tested exhibit the “not enough power” issue then?

  • 1 month later...

I had a email conversation with Leica about the issue, they claim it's a problem with Sigma, Sigma adapted and Panasonic lenses, that's not completly true because I also use the 24-90 VE and when the battery drops below 25% I get the same "insufficient power" message, but yes Sigma and Pansonic are worse. Leica have no answer and no solution. Have just downloaded the new firmware voor the 24-90 (is meanly about linear manual focus) but you never know. Thats brings no solution for the other lenses. I understand from SL2-s buyers that the problem doesn't exist on the new camera. If I get the new one and trade in the old one I wil lose at lot of money. It is unbelievable that we bought a camera that doesn't deliver. Sounds like buying a car and when the gas tank gets below 50% you can't go the fourth and fifth gear. If Nikon or Canon had an issue like this the whole photo community would explode. Looks like we all accept it, because it stays very quiet. For now I only can wait on new firmware to arrive and hope that Leica takes care about it.
