Google photos doesn't want to download DNG's ???

I'm starting to experiment with Leica Fotos.

I've uploaded DNGs to Google and then I tried to download them onto my computer to work on them. I'm amazed because Google in its all seeing and all-powerful goodness appears to convert them to JPG when downloading them onto my computer.

Is this right? Have I done something wrong?

When you upload RAW files with setting High Quality, they are ALWAYS converted to JPEG.

Thanks.

In fact this is the step that I hadn't appreciated. On my android phone, I didn't know that Google photos had settings which could be changed to "original"

Before you get started

Download and install the Google Photos app.

Change your upload size

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Sign in to your Google Account.
  3.  At the top right, tap your account profile photo or initial.
  4. Select Photos settings Settings and then Back up & sync.
  5. Select High quality or Original quality.

If you can't change your upload size, you might be out of storage.

  • Under Back up at lower resolution, tap Resume Backup.

Note: If you use your Google Photos account on multiple devices, and you change your upload size for one device, it will not affect the backup setting on any other device.

Some users may see more options:

  • You can change your upload size to Express backup.
  • If you change your upload size from Express backup to a higher quality option, Google Photos will re-upload any existing photos or videos on your device.
  • You can limit backup data usage.

This has fixed the problem. Now I can move my Fotos to Google photos on the phone and then upload them to my Google account on my computer as DNGs and then download them to wherever I want as DNG.

Still a bit lumpy – because of course it would be best if they could be uploaded directly to Google instead of this second step.
