One thing I haven't seen discussed here or elsewhere is whether the US tariff has negatively affected sales of Leica products in the US.  I wonder how many people prepared to spend $4000 on a lens decided not to purchase it when the price went up to $4400. I would think not many.  But I have to believe that sales were at least somewhat impacted for Leica to take these steps to work around the tariff.

This is a good move by Leica.

It is a bit of relief from the asinine scrotum kicking that U.S. based Leica buyers have been subjected to at the hands of the geniuses at the office of U.S. Trade Representative, headed up by some obscure buffoon of a bureaucrat named Robert Emmet Lighthizer.

Their pointless and ham fisted attempt is apparently intended to force photographers to buy U.S. made cameras and lenses they deem to be "just as good as" Leica - brands like Polaroid, Kodak, Vivitar,  Bell & Howell and General Electric.  🙄

This is what we get when people are given policy making power over something that they know less than nothing about.

It is as laughable as it is sad but it is politics as usual.

How long before we see a US tariff on lenses Made in Portugal?  😋

Not as much impact, I’m sure, as if the $4k lens had become $5k from the full 25% tariff.  I’m more curious about the many other popular, and some more expensive, products that Leica included in the price shift...

Made in europe label is not really well received. Just look at made in Europe Louis Vuitton bags. Not as valuable as really made in France Hermès bag.

Louis Vuitton is now the secretary brand in Asia. The real stuff for rich Asian is Hermès with the made in France cachet. For example.

Of course Hermès car be ten times more expensive than mundane LV.

Just to say that for international buyers, made in Europe = made in eastern europe : Bulgaria, Romania, Slovenia, etc... Not really upmarket. So they want the real deal : made in France, in Germany, in Italy, in England, etc... not the generic made in Europe.

It's possible.  Which is why I just bought two new Made in Germany lenses, just in case :)

Let's hope your "Made in Germany" lenses weren't actually "Made in Portugal"... Bad luck if you got the 50mm f2 😉

Leica should take a lead from Espresso machine maker Elektra. Those bear the label "Handmade in Europe"

Jaap, just a couple of weeks ago my wife and I bought a SMEG coffee maker, while reading the box I discover it says: "Designed in Italy, made in PRC" and I start guessing what PRC meant 🤔 then she told me, "don't you get it? PRC: Popular Republic of China." A posh way to avoid the "C-word" LOL

What difference does it make?

Only Leica could answer that question.

I am pretty sure there is a difference for them, otherwise the SL would say at the bottom Portugal (as it supposed to) instead of Germany.

I did buy a 50 Cron!  And I own an M-A also.  See, I have nothing against products manufactured in Portugal 😉

The only 'bad luck' would be if they were actually labeled 'Made in Portugal' :)
