Leica Camera has launched a new Leica FOTOS app version 2.1 for mobile iOS and Android devices.

Download: iOS App Store (Leica FOTOS) | iOS App Store (Leica FOTOS for iPad) | Google Play Store

With v. 2.1 the app offers geotagging in the background via Bluetooth - but this function is still in the beta phase. In addition, smaller preview images can now be loaded onto the smartphone within a short time and the exposure settings of the camera will now be transferred when the app is started.

New features in Leica FOTOS 2.1:

  • Geotagging for Bluetooth cameras (Beta)
  • Fast download of small previews for sharing
  • Remote settings are kept when connecting

More improvements in Leica FOTOS 2.1:

  • Improved loading of photos in the background
  • Always-on screen while remote recording videos
  • Download progress shows downloaded photos
  • Extended settings for Leica M10, M10-P, M10-M
  • Date & time sync for all up-to-date Leica M10

Leica FOTOS supports:

  • Leica S (Type 007)
  • Leica SL/SL2
  • Leica M10, Leica M10-P, Leica M10-D
  • Leica Q/Q2
  • Leica TL/TL2
  • Leica CL
  • Leica C-Lux
  • Leica D-Lux
  • Leica V-Lux.

Having updated to 2.1, I have switched on Geotagging Always (beta) and the satellite icon appears in both rear and top displays of my SL2, so I assume all is well. Unfortunately, when I look at the metadata of the images, no location data is included. what could I be doing wrong?

Leon, not everything in your list is working as promised.  For example, when I connected my Android Moto G7 to my SL2, it shifted the camera into P mode, as the earlier versions have done.  Using remote, I put the camera back into A mode.  I noticed that exposure compensation was still the value that I had previously set, so Fotos did not override that.  When I disconnected (using the disconnect button on Fotos, the Camera was left in the state which I had adjusted it to after connecting.  That's not the behavior I was expecting from the announcement.

However, when I connect using Fotos 2.1 on iOS using an iPad Pro, the remote app leaves the camera in the state that it found it in, rather than putting in P mode.  It does take it out of the User Profile that I had set.  After playing with settings in Fotos, I could put the camera into 2 sec delay from Fotos, which worked when I clicked the shutter on the camera, didn't work (no delay) when I clicked the shutter on Remote, but still worked with 2 sec delay on the camera.  So that's not right yet, but it is better on iOS than on Android.

(Sigh!)

Continuing the comments above, since Fotos has to help out the M10-D folks, who cannot set their camera's controls any other way, the best procedure on exit is that Fotos leaves the camera in the state to which it has been brought.  But when you start Fotos and go to Remote, you should find it in whatever state you left the camera in, not impose some "standard" setup for which Fotos is prepared.  Tricky question -- in cameras which have user profiles, must Fotos start the camera in some default state?  That's probably why we are getting P mode on the L-mount cameras.  The need to have some form of touch AF working in Remote may be behind this.

An old problem which has not changed is that Remote can set the Drive mode into some useful states, like self-timer, bracket, and continuous, but it doesn't initiate those actions.  Instead, pressing the shutter on Remote gives you a single shot.  Pressing the shutter on the camera may give you those actions, but perhaps not if you tried from Remote first.  Whether using Remote returns the camera to single shot depends on the camera model and whether you are in the Android or iOS version...

Here's how I'd like to see drive mode work in Fotos Remote:

shutter button initiates the indicated action from Remote for single, delayed, and bracket shots  (also for multi-shot high res when that is available).  For continuous shooting, first button press starts shooting, second button press stops shooting.  On disconnect from Fotos, camera is left in whatever Drive mode has been set.

My experience was identical. No location information after updating to fotos 2.1 in my SL2.

I think there is progress.  I've gotten both the iOS and the Android versions to work, but with lots of difficulty connecting.  Messing around with multiple phones and an iPad may be part of causing trouble.  With each version I have been able to get the camera to put geo coordinates into a picture that I took with the camera and to do it without the wifi running.  That is the basic objective.  The iOS version seems more solid than the Android but both are making progress.  Neither is anywhere near as useable as Panasonic's Lumix Synch, which does these things for my S1R.

I have been happy with the improvements this time.

Using it on IOS and SL2 it acquired the GPS metadata promptly and downloading the images to the device is a lot quicker.

Only thing that disappoints me at this time is that after a time period of using it the link is lost with the IOS device   however I am able to re-establish it by going to my IOS device and bringing the Fotos App into the foreground.

I still liked the implementation in the original SL better however.

I just clicked on the link provided for the apple store. These reviews are disastrous. One Star. I think even the old version did slightly better.

Nobody likes this kind of app.  Even the best of the remote control apps (Panasonic Lumix Synch) can barely muster two stars.  I think everybody expects more performance and seamlessness than BlueTooth and wifi can provide.  I need it from time to time, and am grateful for improvements.

Hi Scott

I do like this type of software. I did not have any hopes when Nikon came out with their Snap Bridge software. I works however fantastically well and maintains a low power BT connection to the Z. If I want to, all files receive GPS coordinates and get loaded with 2MB version onto my iPhone. You take a photo and three seconds later you can upload it on some Social Media account. No significant battery drain. And it is free. I can switch between iPad and iPhone on the camera with one click.

Imagine all this on our M10Ds. I know it does not have BT. But just image it.

Cheers

Ivo

My observation: geotagging works .... sporadically (FOTOS 2.1, iOS, SL2).

When the satellite icon is displayed on camera, then the image will have GPS coordinates. Although Bluetooth connection seems to be active all the time (Bluetooth icon shown), the geotagging (satellite icon) disappears and reappears periodically. Hopefully Leica will fix it soon.

I agree that Nikon's Snap Bridge geotagging works very well.

Interestingly I was able to install the Iphone version on my Ipad and the Lightroom integration worked. It looked even like I could download a DNG and export that.

So looks like the Ipad app with the 50$ charge may not be needed

  • 1 month later...

I always had issues with Leica Fotos transfer in the past, and I gave up all together.

Now, I tried again, hoping for improvements; but, I am still very disappointed! It is just not working and looks such a lousy feature for Leica!

Maybe I am doing something wrong; in that case, we should have a complete instruction about using lousy APP!

This App is an embarrassment. Pathetic. Not fit for purpose.  8 months on, basic features, such as ability to connect quickly and reliably, and to maintain connection, provide gps data, don’t drain the battery in 5m, support more than one card, etc, etc, don’t work reliably.  It’s like trying to hook your personal digital assistant (PDA) to your computer 20 years ago.  There is no point in posting diagnostic reports as the software is so flakey it is a wonder that it passed any basic acceptance tests.  The management needs to get a grip and hire someone that knows what they are doing rather than someone that appears to be learning on the job. Charging money for this absence of functionality seems to be the brainchild of another intern, from some cynical business school.  Doesn’t do much for the brand.
