rpittal Posted May 12, 2020 Share #21 Posted May 12, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) Even though largish, it is not that large and is my goto 28 now. Only use the 28/2 or 28/2.8 for walk around. This was taken on a Panasonic S1R at Mono Lake (pardon the compression): Welcome, dear visitor! NRKstudio Posted May 13, 2020 Share #23 Posted May 13, 2020 20 hours ago, Peters said: It's nice, but it's also: A little bigger than what you would want from a rangefinder lens, thereby blocking the viewfinder. An awkward frame line for the M viewfinder (though I can get by with little problem). Rather expensive. You can get a Q which is cheaper, comes with a weather-resistant back up camera to the M, at only 1/2 stop slower. The Q doesn’t do real Monochrom (capital M) shots unfortunately. Also the 28 lux has almost no distortion unlike the Semi-lux on the Q, which unfortunately relies on SDC to fix the outer frame. It kind of puts a damper on the 3 Asph surfaces in the semi-lux. The frame lines you can get used to, and using a 28mm Voigt hot shoe finder is fun to mix it up a bit sometimes. It is a little large, and you do need the hood to stop the wash out from obtuse sun angles. 19 hours ago, Fedro said: which are the other two, if I can ask? 50 APO LHSA and the 75 Lux! Really enjoy the D35/1.4 ZM for all out resolving power too. 35/2 Ultron is a sleeper, it’s supposedly an 8 element Cron modernized. Also the 50/.95 Noct will covert you into a Leica believer. Thanks for asking too!

No worries, I was wondering .. mine are the 50 APO and the Nocti (75). 28 Lux is the lens that convinced me to get into Leica digital, before I was only using Leica for film and Canon/Fuji for digital, so it has a special place in my heart

LeicaPassion Posted May 14, 2020 Share #26 Posted May 14, 2020 I can easily manage my 28 lux on M bodies. The lens was a bit large and heavy at first but I quickly adjusted. Its rendering is superb.

An M10 with a compact 28 Elmarit ASPH or a 50 APO is fast enough and light enough to barely be noticed.

I actually use them with both cameras and the 28 lux in particular is zero issues on the M the 75 is not a walk around lens on either camera, but in general the SL is not a walk around camera either I traded my 28 elmarit Asph for the Lux and zero regrets the difference in weight is probably less than my spare mobile phone

Also can't justify the $7300 expense when an $1800 Elmarit will do nearly all the time.
LeicaPassion Posted May 15, 2020 Share #30 Posted May 15, 2020 The 28 lux has such a great rendering. At the end of the day, the final image counts most despite the ouch factor to the bank account.
setuporg Posted May 17, 2020 Share #31 Posted May 17, 2020 (edited) I think the best love for the 28mm Lux was from the Street Silhouettes guy: https://www.streetsilhouettes.com/home/2016/7/18/leica-28mm-summilux-the-perfect-vacation-lens Basically it comes down to fitting the whole party in a restaurant in the shot while still being a general-purpose walk-around lens for a vacation. Who else can do that?!:) Edited May 17, 2020 by setuporg
humerc Posted May 25, 2020 Author Share #32 Posted May 25, 2020 Thanks for the tip with www.streetsilhouettes.com! He really seems to love his Lux 28. (Just type Summilux 28 in the search field and you will find a lot of articles). It becomes more interesting for me from day to day!
tgray Posted May 29, 2020 Share #33 Posted May 29, 2020 Not an owner, but 28mm is my favorite focal length. After looking at the cost, size, and images, I decided that sticking with the 28mm Summicron worked best for me. It's comfortably smaller and I like the images from it more. The extra stop of speed would be nice sometimes, particularly on film, but with digital, f/2 has been fast enough for me. The size of the Summicron is pretty much ideal for me. There's something about the bokeh in some shots of the Summilux that I find less than desirable. I'm pretty sure that I am alone in this, so there's no need to convince me otherwise 2

Was sharper, better corrected into the corners, better bokeh, required less correction of chromatic aberration and to my eye, produced better color and smoother contrast. I used both lenses on the M10. No regrets whatsoever. The 28 Cron Asph v2 paired with the 50 Lux Asph meets 90% of my street photography needs. 1

Thanks for reminding me - the chromatic aberration evident in some pics of the Summilux annoyed me too. Which is purely academic for me as I shoot 95% B&W Still, it looks like a wonderful lens and I’d love to try it for real one day.
Drmat Posted June 15, 2020 Share #38 Posted June 15, 2020 I had the same setup as the OP. Sold the 35cron to buy the 28 lux. Currently down to the 28 elmarit, 28 lux, and 50 lux. The 28 summilux is special... not really sure what else to say. If it were not for the fact that 28 feels a bit too wide for where my photography is going (or maybe it is my 50mm mind that is the problem) it would be my only lens. The size takes a bit getting used too, but it balances nicely in my hands on the M10M. I get more keepers wide open with the 28 than with the 50... 1.4 is very useable. The 28 elmarit is a good lens, but it feels like a toy compared to the lux. Of course, all this is splitting hairs - if I was forced to give up 2 of the lenses at random I am sure I would be more than happy with the shooting experience and the resultS from whichever lens I am “stuck” with. I do not miss my 35cron v4. Wouldn’t mind a 35lux pre-asph, but worry that images will feel too soft after using the 28lux.
Herr Barnack Posted June 15, 2020 Share #39 Posted June 15, 2020 The 28mm Summilux on my Q2 is one of my favorite lenses, the other being the 50mm f/1.0 Noctilux. I do not have a 28 Summilux for my M kit but hope to one day.
