petert531 Posted August 11, 2006 Share #1 Posted August 11, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) More in my series...it's starting to get to be one, isn't it. Another Russian girl, what can I say? They eyes, what eyes, and there is not photoshop trick there! Same girl, two very different looks, I think I did OK. I am totally a romantic and just love the softness, that's why I like Paolo. It looks like window light, but it is not, I am very proud of the lighting on that one. It was a terriblly cloudy day and the light was very blue, so I had to make my own 'daylight'. The other is an experiment. I am generally happy, but I know the body expression isn't there. I am still very much learning this, but I wanted to show how to present the same person if two very different ways. Since I am a nobody I have to do all the clothing myself. People that I know have varying opinions on this, but I think it's far from the worst. Anyway I look forward to hearing from you all. I couldn' resist having two portraits.. Thanks,Merci, Vielen Dank' Peter
Advertisement Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 Hi petert531, Take a look here Anastasia. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jim_royer Posted August 11, 2006 Share #2 Posted August 11, 2006 I like the first and last one best, just because I can see the face more clearly. However, all three are posed and photographed beautifully. Jim
albertwang Posted August 11, 2006 Share #3 Posted August 11, 2006 Sweet, by the way, if you are going to do a whole book of Russian women photos, I promise that I will be first in line to pre-order it!
stuny Posted August 11, 2006 Share #4 Posted August 11, 2006 Peter - Please just keep these coming -- You know how much I like your work. I prefer 3 to 1 because of the head angle, but the exposure and lighting on both are superb. I really like the strong hair light, it's impact on the upper legs, and the pose in 2. Please do not abandon your wonderfully imaginative compositions, too. The one I remember best had a pair of cables going across frame, each clamped in frame. This was before the new Forum, so perhaps posting it again would not be a bad idea.
Overgaard Posted August 11, 2006 Share #5 Posted August 11, 2006 Wow, it's really great. The first one I would crop away the below and keep the face. the last one is simply a fantastic expression and clarity. What equipment was used. I didn't fully get that. vic vic Posted August 11, 2006 Share #6 Posted August 11, 2006 hi peter great portraits - great in their simplicity and subtelnace. just love them and agaon - no more words to add here. about the second photo - well - no words but from different reason :-)))) but try and try - u will find it at the end - i see it - u just have it in u :-) in the third photo - i dont know if u like it or not, but if u dont - then u can avoid the "open moouth/lips" of the model just by controling the model. a tip, sometimes i just do on my own face the mimics that i want from model or things i want to avoid. so many models (wether pros or just friends) i work with more or less regulary - we dont even need to talk - just look at each other. this may add u great flexibility. again peter - great work :-)

asantos Posted August 11, 2006 Share #9 Posted August 11, 2006 Great pictures! Could you tell us something about the light setup used?
petert531 Posted August 12, 2006 Author Share #10 Posted August 12, 2006 Lighting exposure info for those who expressed intrest. Single elinchrom head set at 18 ws (its minimum) through a rotalux 3X3 on a boom about 2 m up. Pointed down and out to 'feather' the light. This means light at the edge of the box rather than the middle. See the catch light in the eye. Recently I have fallen in love with the top down umbrella look. THis was a departure and back to my roots as I find this lighting mimics a window's softness better. Exposure about f4. I would have liked wider, but I just can't get the light any lower!!! If I could afford a digital back for my MF (Blad) I would use my 120 f/4 Macro wide open and get an even better OOF look. Alas I don't have that kind of money. Sandokan Posted August 12, 2006 Share #11 Posted August 12, 2006 I like the third one best, but first is also very good. I will comment about the second - maybe it helps next time? In the second, the blouse (green colour and shape) does nothing for the model - and my wife always likes to see the shoes people wear (I can look at any number of women I like when I am with her, as long as I only comment about the shoes). It looks like there should be some dynamism or movement in the photo with that pose - or at least a "hungry" tiger look or roaring lion? Her hair is also gorgeous, so you should make more of that. robert_parker Posted August 14, 2006 Share #14 Posted August 14, 2006 Peter My vote is for the third one, as well - I think I prefer the crop in the first - don't really understand the second - but the expression of the third frame makes it for me.
