If you are not happy with it/framelines buy a 35mm or 50mm! Seems like the 40mm came with the camera. I already saw this a couple of times that somene bundles a camera with the 40mm. I would not use one. That's too confusing for me when you don't have proper framelines.

Buy another one (35mm) or take a picture and compare it what you see in the viewfinder. It's a matter of getting used to it.

Only the really expensive ones offer 100% view. So with most SLRs there is slightly more on the frame compared to what you see in the viewfinder. Fair point. But my point was referring more that Leica finders can be (marginally) less accurate depending on distance to the subject. Whereas SLRs are consistent in their inconsistency if I can put it that way. earleygallery Posted April 18, 2020 Share #25 Posted April 18, 2020 I'd think with a digital M you should be able to get comfortable using a 40mm within about an hour of shooting some test shots and comparing what you see in the viewfinder with what you see on the LCD. Of course you see two sets of framelines for each lens mounted, but only the frames relevant to the lens on the camera should be used.
rpavich Posted April 19, 2020 Author Share #26 Posted April 19, 2020 UPDATE: The M8 developed a menu glitch that hasn't gotten better. It's got what looks like tv interference running through the menu screens. Scratchy lines like the LCD is going bad or something. It's going back. I'm bidding on a TYP 262 now. I guess this thread is moot now.

For use without fear M (typ 262) is a better choice than M8/M9 ( those I used to like but now let's go ahead 😇 ) which are old now and some risk to develop not repairable flaws or too expensive to repair. tommyleicaR4M5 Posted May 15, 2020 Share #30 Posted May 15, 2020 (edited) I bought an M8 and Voigt 40mm Nokton 1.4 a little over the month ago after being out of the Leica game for a bunch of years. I love the camera and the tiny and very sharp Nokton lens but I did not like the 50mm frame lines it automatically brought up. I ended up sending the lens to DAG Camera to have the lens modified to bring up the 35mm frame lines.....and I couldn't be happier. I find it way more practical and user friendly to shoot within the 35mm frame lines than estimate outside of the 50mm frame lines. I'm finding that the 40mm lens practically fits the 35mm frames almost perfectly. If necessary, the M8 files allow for a little cropping if you're a little loose on the framing but you can't replace a scalp that was cut off in the frame because you didn't estimate enough above the lines. Wasn't into flicking the frame lever either. Anyway, to each their own. I'm enjoying this set up very much. tommonego@gmail.com Posted May 16, 2020 Share #31 Posted May 16, 2020 My M8 came with a 40 on it, the way the frame selector lever worked seemed like it was the only lens on the camera for a while. YYee and DAG won't touch the M8, so over the 6 months I have had the camera, changing lenses it is finally freed up. Sending the 40 out to get adjusted is a good idea, I am not using it much, flicking or forcing the frame lever is a pain. There was not much of an up charge for the lens compared to M8 bodies selling in August.
fabianoliver Posted July 17, 2020 Share #32 Posted July 17, 2020 Hi, i bought a Nokton 40/1.4, and did the convertion to bring the 35mm line on the VF. Far better sensation, and results, than 50 lines. Far. It's not a problem anymore. Fabian

No frames for 135. This is shown on page 103 of the instruction manual. I’m thinking of getting the APO-Telyt 135mm lens to my M8. (Have 24mm and 50mm) I have seen good results here with that combination. I will use it mainly at close distance, flowers, butterflies etc. Have no lens to test, but is the focusing patch similar to FOV? And is focusing/framing without viewfinder magnifier on the M8 usable or do I want one? Edit: Looking now through viewfinder I feel I need the 1.4 magnifier to be able to use 135mm on M8 Edited February 11, 2022 by MattiasAndersson
a.noctilux Posted February 11, 2022 Share #34 Posted February 11, 2022 Using 135mm lens on M8 is difficult to obtain good results. Kind of miss or hiss. However I used the Tele-Elmar 135mm that I have since long, guessing the framing ( no 135 mm in M8 VF, as stated above #32 at page 103). I had good results but bad results more often. I think that the Apo-Telyt-M 135mm would be the same. Magnifier can help but not in my use (x1.25 and x1.4) to finetune framing and focussing. 👇 My best results (most consistent anyway) when I use the Elmarit 135 with it's attached x1.5 mag and using 90 frame lines. like this one from Wiki Welcome, dear visitor! MattiasAndersson Posted February 18, 2022 Share #37 Posted February 18, 2022 UV/IR cut E55 on it’s way. Framing and focusing seems to work fine, this will be fun. Tripod or at least monopod is needed I think, M8 above ISO 1000 is not so nice in color...
tommonego@gmail.com Posted March 1, 2022 Share #38 Posted March 1, 2022 I use the M8 sometimes with a 135 Tele-Elmar, I generally use ISO 160 or 320. I can hand hold it to 1/125 but try to keep to 1/250, any thing below a tripod or mono pod helps, keeping the ISO low really helps the image quality.
