gabrielaszalos Posted April 18, 2020 Author Share #21 Posted April 18, 2020 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Frankly I don’t care so much whether it brasses or not, as long as it lasts me a long time and stays with me through rougher times too. If a small plastic or a zipper cracks the camera then that’d suck. A bit of wear I’m fine with, even if it’s ridiculously early. Surprising still. I’m pretty sure this is by design and if Leica is messing this up after 14 years of making the MP I would be surprised. It was so obvious the guy had taken a file to the thing it was ridiculous. 😂 I'm actually surprised that Leica hasn't capitalized on this desire for a worn look and come out with pre-brassed 'road worn' editions of its cameras. This concept seems to have worked well for companies like Fender guitars and some luxury watch brands whose customers want a vintage look but a new product. Maybe Leica has already done this and I'm just unaware of it.

There was a guy who I suspect just broke his camera and then went on to show how badass he is with his cameras by messing it up even more and I imagine hoping to gain a premium price for a cool 'genuine' (lol) brassed M9. Mute-on Posted April 19, 2020 Share #27 Posted April 19, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) The main thing is to enjoy your MP, which you clearly are, and celebrate the wear from use as part of the camera’s history. You have a lifetime of history to create together! I do agree with others who have suggested that the loss of paint on the back edge of the top plate looks like scratching rather than the more usual smooth brassing. I wonder whether there is a metal clip or buckle on your strap that is knocking against the camera at times. A ring on you thumb or forefinger might also have the same effect. All the best. J Happy to pursue this J. I have no rings, my strap is from Luigi (smooth all around) but I did have a Peak Design strap which has some metals and plastic. I don’t recall having put them in such a position that such damage was possible. I honestly try to take care of it without babying it. It’s all good. Welcome, dear visitor! wattsy Posted April 19, 2020 Share #30 Posted April 19, 2020 (edited) I think I remember the M9 in question. It looked like it had had an accident with an angle grinder. I think the owner was this former member who, to be fair, is a bona fide photographer. Edited April 19, 2020 by wattsy

Could be him, but as a bona fide photographer earning his money from his camera he may have more 'leeway' as to how he treats it than others. My cameras banged together when I was a pro, they got scuffed and damaged for the sake of having them in the juxtaposition I needed them in. But in context at the same time everybody was saying how tough the 'black paint' covering was on the M9 he had put decades of wear on it within six weeks and was posting the result as if it was a badge of honour.

A quick search in the M9 forum on "brassing 'in the title returns this one: It is probably the one I was thinking of but in my memory it was much worse. Interestingly, in that thread someone makes this prediction: On 5/19/2010 at 9:15 AM, 250swb said: Aside from the M4 being chrome plated (which is very hard wearing) its unlikely that any M9 will get as vernerable looking as the Winogrand M4 because they will all be out of action due to an unrepairable sensor or circuit board long before!
Archiver Posted April 22, 2020 Share #33 Posted April 22, 2020 Last year, I saw a secondhand black Monochrom classic which had been 'gently sandpapered'. The paint on the front under the shutter button had been worn down to a fine grey. You could see the grooves from the sandpaper or scouring pad. It was going for a song, and I've long wanted a Monochrom, but I'm glad I looked at the test images I shot. The sensor was full of dust and corrosion. My M9 has slight brassing after ten years of regular use. The shutter button surround has been worn to a pale metal grey, the corners are minimally brassed after coming in and out of my bag for years, and there's some minor brassing on the front and back in the area of the red dot. This took place over years and years. Leica Store San Francisco made a rather gorgeous black paint Monochrom with Horween leather. The idea was that the camera would brass according to your usage. Only 80 were made. https://us.leica-camera.com/World-of-Leica/Leica-News/Local/USA/2019/Leica-M-Monochrom-Typ-246-"Your-Mark"-Edition https://www.leicastoresf.com/your-mark

Left of top plate This one I have no idea where it's coming from but I guess it's fine. Probably when I carry it in my car. This side rests inside the compartment on rubber. Maybe the rubber rubs? Advance Lever (quite sexy) The brassing on the advance lever I find beautiful. The MP was manufactured in January 2020 and purchased by me in February. I have shot around 20 rolls through it. I passed the 20 rolls this week but a did dozens of empty shots and the advance lever in mine is not even close to this one, the only place where brass is visible to my eye is close to the contact point where the lever touches the flash mount, those 2 parts hits each other from time to time if i don't catch the lever when is traveling back. Very interesting The plot thickens once more... Mine is still the same. It’s probably because of me carrying it in a fairly tight car compartment. I figured that the tightness would ensure it’s stable enough, and that the gummy walls would be safe for the camera, but it seems I was wrong. I can only assume it was because of that. I did find that I have started enjoying the marks though!
mediumformula Posted June 5, 2020 Share #36 Posted June 5, 2020 Is this natural brassing or did someone relic this with sandpaper? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Leica-MP-0-72-Film-Rangefinder-Camera-Body-Black/283895981957?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160908105057%26meid%3Dd236bf554181422f934d78aee45975ba%26pid%3D100675%26rk%3D5%26rkt%3D15%26mehot%3Dnone%26sd%3D252028853307%26itm%3D283895981957%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2380057%26brand%3DLeica&_trksid=p2380057.c100675.m4236&_trkparms=pageci%3Af5eab8e9-a6ea-11ea-aa85-74dbd180f5ad|parentrq%3A82e3cc751720aaaa669f5840fff59620|iid%3A1

Camera West is an authorized Leica dealer in Southern California. They must have taken this camera in on trade. The brassing definitely doesn't look like it occurred naturally, so I'd guess the prior owner falls into your second category 😉
