Thought about posting this in the 'Random Automotive Details' thread, mainly to highlight the impeccable execution & level of detail of the front compartment of a Type 997 Porsche 911 4-liter GT3 Cup Car, but after studying the car and the photo it occured to me that after 50+  years of club & vintage racing and building my own cars at totally unreasonable investments of time & money, I can now walk into a dealer & purchase a cars like this, and wind up with a far superior and more capable car than the most rabid enthusiast, left to his own devices, could ever create.

A few years ago the president of a British Car Club I belonged to presented each member with one of these T-shirts prior to taking off on our big annual rally.......... I thought the small slice representing fun 'trouble free' motoring was much too big.

Excellent, John, although I would propose an extra quite large slice called "Unsuccessfully trying to trace ominous rattles, creaks, pings, squeals, and judders."

You have owned Land Rovers and Morgans?? :D

I well remember, trundling up the M5 motorway heading for sister's place my 90 developing an annoying squeak.  After 30 some miles it suddenly stopped.  Relating tale to Bro-in-Law, we both said at the same time "Either it fixed itself or whatever was making the noise had fallen off" :)

I recall from years ago a friend, who was fastidious about the condition of his Mark II Jaguar, discovering that a rattling sound had emerged but only while the car was moving, which made tracking it down very difficult.  His long suffering girlfriend was made to walk beside the car at low speed to try to work out where the rattle was coming from but after weeks and weeks of trying this and that he was no closer to solving it and was forced to put up with it until he reached breaking point after a few days and would start all over again - with the same result.

Some weeks later I happened to meet up with a mutual friend of ours over lunch and one or two fairly well-behaved ales and remembered our Jag friend's problem so I started to tell him about it.

"Oh I know what that is," he cut me off, and I anticipated a brief history of rattles in Jags but instead he said "I was bored waiting for him one day so I popped a small handful of gravel into one of his hub caps as a prank."

 I recall recently reading a post by stuny, stating that the Cobra Daytona Coupes are among his alltime favorite cars. Given the tedium of these times, combined with the onset of an Idaho winter and the requirement to do some housekeeping in my photofiles, I ran across these images of a couple of the original 6 Pete Brock-designed Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupes, as featured at the Monterey Historics a few yeards ago.

I can fully understand and support the extremely high level of enthusiasm for this iconic car. The Coupe design displays a thorough grounding in aerodynamics, vehicle dynamics and  engineering. Add to its mystique the names of the races in which they were victorious, then remember the legends that drove them and then-, to complete the flashback, plumb your memory to recall the sound of the high-compression 289 engines howling down the Mulsanne straight, and it's easy to understand why these cars are held in such high esteem by those fortunate enough to see & hear them in their heyday.

I permitted myself a little artistic freedom with this image; not sure it's good photography, but I thought it made for a neat image to show the Webers and the top of the engine as seen through the radiator hot-air exit in the open 'bonnet'.

I firmly believe it's significant and reveals the thought, intuition and sound engineering that it was decided to utilize the smaller, lighter & more reliable 289 cu. in. ( 4.7 liter ) V8, to such good effect, as opposed to the relatively unmanagable 427 so beloved by the latter-day 'wannabees'.

For '64, those are impressive aero details.........rememeber, that was 3 years before the first wings appeared on F-1 cars. The quality and detail excution is impressive #26 is one of the most original of the six produced.

Thank you for this wonderful Christmas gift, and thank you for remembering that the car is one of my all-time favorites.  I have packed away four very good 1/18th diecast scale model cars.  One of them is the Cobra Daytona Coupe with a proper scale Dan Gurney for President bumper sticker on back.  We had one of those on the back of the vehicle my best friend and I drove around North America in the summer of '64, a presidential election year.  When asked about the sticker someplace in the Midwest, I replied that Dan would be a far better choice than either of the clowns up for election.  That angered the man so much, we immediately hopped into the vehicle and drove off in the opposite direction of the other guy's vehicle.  Now Dan (one of my favorite drivers of all time) is dead of natural causes, and my best friend was riding the back seat of an F4 on a bombing run of the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Cambodia when he was shot down and killed.  So often seemingly unrelated things will remind me of my best friend.  Thank you for helping to dredge up the memory.
