John Z. Goriup Posted May 27, 2020 Share #641 Posted May 27, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) The one and only genuine 'Ken Miles Cobra'. Six 289 cu. in.The most famous, significant and without question most successful Shelby Cobra ever. Six similar 289 cu in. roadsters were built for the Shelby Racing Team in those years, but # 98 ( Ser.# CSX 2431 ) was his car, in which he won numeroous races, including Meadowdale near Chicago where I got to meet him and chat with him. Between races he tested and helped develop many of the details and mods which enabled the Shelby Team to win the SCCA championship. The car was sold when it was retired to make room for the 427 cu.in. Cobras, but the Shelby organization re-purchased the car a few years ago and completely restored it, since a series of private owners had inflicted all kinds of indignities, including several repaints, upon this historic and important car which wiped away most of the history, patina & personality of the car.............what a piece of automotive history. John Z. Goriup Posted May 28, 2020 Share #645 Posted May 28, 2020 Ah, die Bosheit der toten Sachen. After years & years of passionate collecting, you finally decide to bite the bullet and join the top ranks of collectors, spend several million on one of the 19 Ferrari Barchettas ever produced, probably spend close to another million restoring and sorting it to assure that it's good enough to earn that elusive invitation to the worls foremost Concours d'Elegance .........and then this; it overheats and bursts its radiator hose while idling & looking for its assigned spot - a whole different level of motor mania. Hiles is correct, that is a Mercedes 300 SLR, in fact it's the sister car to the Moss / Jenkinson Mercedes 300 SLR which won the race, the '55 Mille Miglia. The numbers assigned to the cars in the Mille Miglia back then actually reflected the start times of the car for timing and score-keeping purposes since the Mille Miglia was run TT style with cars taking off individually at fixed intervals. Juan Manuel Fangio, driving alone, took of in the car shown above at 6:58. Moss and 'Jenks' started at 7:22, i.e. half an hour later, hence the famous number 722 on the Moss / Jankinson car, but managed to pass and beat Fangio, who finished in 2nd place, by over half an hour. JZG I was referring to the exhaust burns on the paintwork. Jenk's report in Motor Sport of their victory is a great read. When Moss and Jenks appeared at Goodwood in 722 a few years ago, he had his famous home made 'toilet-roll' pace notes machine with him. Trust it is in good hands, hopefully in the Mercedes Museum.
