Renea, who at the time (10 years ago) was the marketing manager for Lime Rock Park racetrack in Connecticut.  She was ginning up interest in the track's activities by bringing about a dozen cars to Grand Central Terminal.  A delightful person.  She confirmed that the late John Fitch was still active with the track at the time.  Fitch was both one of the most loved and most hated drivers in racing for his position and impact on adopting safety measures for tracks, cars and drivers.

When the Shelby Cobras were first introduced in '62 they were shockingly fast on circuits with short straights, but gave up a lot in topspeed at tracks like Lemans or Monza because the roadster configuration was an aerodynamic nightmare. In practice for the '63 24 hour race Ferrari GTOs were turning 186 mph ( 300 kph, which was the holy grail at Lemans in those days) down the Mulsanne straight, with the Cobras limping along almost 18 / 19 mph slower through the same timing traps. Their solution was the 'LeMans Removable Hardtop' which gave a little more top speed, but also made the car more stable and contributed greatly to driver comfort.

Saws this interesting original combo with actual period Lemans racing provenance at a vintage recing meeting and thought you might enjoy seeing this very rare option. Even with the top they still lost about 10 seconds per lap to the Ferraris, but one of these nevertheless was the first non-Ferrari finisher in 7th place, and was a harbinger of things to come , as the aero data and general silhouette were put to good use by Peter Brock in designing the sensational and successful Cobra Daytona Coupe.

Another one from Goodwood 2001.

This time I'm stumped. I thought it was a Ferrari 166 but having looked everywhere, I don't think it is. I'm sure one of you must know.....

All the things I dislike about the latest generation of hibrid, computerized 'supercars' and all the negative feelings I harbor towards those horrible 'appliances' can be multiplied several times over re most modern 'superbikes'. Give me the charm, predictability, performance and balanced handling of a properly set-up & well sorted vertical twin like a Dunstall-Norton, Enfield, Triumph or BSA anytime.
