Yes, it's ok Ken, seemsJaapv unfortunately got a faulty lens, CL has use of OS on the lens, just doesn't show in the menu system, as with all non Leica image stabilised lenses, or at least the three I have used on it. Neither the Pan 24-105, 70-200 or this Sigma zoom are recognised as using IS in the menu system of the CL, it remains greyed out while working correctly. tritentrue Posted July 25, 2020 Share #86 Posted July 25, 2020 Sensing once again that autofocus wasn't giving me the best the Sigma 100-400mm and 1.4X are capable of, I A/B'ed a few known targets. Below is the starkest example, shot at roughly 50-60 meters--really not much to complain about, but enough for me to focus manually on static, distant subject matter going forward. anickpick Posted July 30, 2020 Share #87 Posted July 30, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have received my copy today. First impressions: Optically it comes really close to the Leica 90-280 at close and mid range distances. Except for the extreme edges, it is excellent. Towards infinity, the Leica seems to be far superior.... AF issues with the Sigma? OIS is not quite as good as with the Leica lens, but it still does the job. Focus (AFS is all I tested) is absolutely silent and super fast.

I tried it--very quickly--on my CL and was less than fully satisfied. But I didn't give it a fair test and will do so again.
tritentrue Posted August 13, 2020 Share #93 Posted August 13, 2020 For those of us who are experiencing inconsistent autofocus with the Sigma 100-400mm, an outing with another long lens setup brought to mind a possible cause. The Lumix S Pro 70-200mm f/4 with the DMW-STC20 2X teleconverter gave me fits on the SL, as performance was horrible, and that nice manual focus clutch Panasonic put at the front of the lens is rendered totally useless by the jumpy focus-by-wire system. But until today, I hadn't really given the Lumix a fair try on the CL. Autofocus with the lens and 2X at f/8 was almost-but-not-quite on most shots, but excellent on a few; all while shooting in bright sunlight. But with the 1.4X attached to the lens at f/5.6, AF was fast and critically accurate except in instances when my movement could have been what threw it off. The CL was a 2017 release, probably in development for who knows how long before that. Back then, there were quite a few cameras spec'd as having limitations with autofocus at apertures smaller than f/5.6. Maybe that's the issue, or at least a contributing factor? I couldn't find a spec sheet with info that could confirm or rule out the possibility. CL with Lumix S Pro 70-200mm f/4 + 1.4X . . . Welcome, dear visitor! chris_tribble Posted August 14, 2020 Share #94 Posted August 14, 2020 A question - I'm seriously considering the Sigma 100-400. Up until now I get the sense that most of the reports in this thread are by SL1 or CL users. Is anyone using this lens on the SL2? Anyone have experiences of focus accuracy / performance in general on the SL2? I'd be really interested to hear if you have... Thanks.

Thanks. @Boojay has that kit, but has been using it on the CL up until now. I can't imagine it will work less well there, especially with all that extra stabilization (Sigma says the lens and body stabilization work together and are additive). There's a lot more on this lens under the CL thread.....

Autofocus is super fast, silent and accurate. Stabilization is good but not excellent. With the 1.4 teleconverter most pictures are slightly blurry (on a 1:1 pixel examination). While the Sigma is not quite as excellent optically as the Leica 90-280, it is still very good at close and mid distances and it is much nicer to carry. I rarely need a 400mm lens (I don't do critters generally) so despite being tempted by the portability of the Sigma 100-400 am really hovering between the Panasonic 70-200 (with maybe the x1.4 extender) and waiting for the Sigma 70-200 in L mount. I'm finding myself pushed away from the Leica 90-280 because it starts too long. I've had years with Canon 70-200 L 2.8 lenses and I know that FL. For theatre / music / events / weddings /reportage these lenses have been bread and butter for thirty years. Still mulling! Thanks. tritentrue Posted August 26, 2020 Share #98 Posted August 26, 2020 (edited) Second time out with the Lumix 70-200mm f/4 with both teleconverters and the CL this morning left me with a slightly different impression than on a previous outing. What seemed like an AF issue with the lens and 2X the first time around looked more like an OIS problem today. The almost-but-not-quite focused look I got previously and again on some shots today appeared to occur on shots when I composed and shot quickly rather than giving OIS a couple of seconds to stabilize the image. Activating the shutter too quickly resulted in an OOF-like halo on some shots, and that's in addition to lack of acuity imparted by the teleconverter. Its optics are something like one might find on a 2X made by a third-party manufacturer in the 1980's. No such OIS issue was noted when the 1.4X TC was used. The combination's AF is fairly reliable. The TC's optics seem okay-ish, but not as good as the 1.4X offerings from other major manufacturers. The main limitations of the lens/1.4X combo are that it gives only a roughly 400mm AOV on the CL, and that it's soundly outperformed by the better R telephotos. Strangely, both Lumix lens/TC combinations yield a darker viewfinder than other long glass I've used on the CL. It's reflected in shutter speeds as well when the lens and 2X are combined, anecdotally around two thirds to a full stop slower at f/8 than the Sigma 100-400+TC at f/9. The Lumix 2X has been retired to paperweight status. I'd love to see Sigma build a lightweight (diffractive optics, maybe?) 400-500mm prime to a quality level rather than to a price point. I think they sell themselves short by positioning themselves as the "cheaper alternative" in the L-mount alliance when we all know they are capable of topnotch glass whenever they choose to manufacture it. **steps down from soapbox** CL with Lumix 70-200mm f/4 + 1.4X . . . tritentrue Posted September 8, 2020 Share #100 Posted September 8, 2020 A footnote on the matter of L-mount teleconverters: previously I tried my Sigma TC-1411 1.4X on my Lumix 70-200mm f/4 and it worked properly. Out of sheer curiosity today I mounted the Lumix 2X teleconverter on the Sigma 100-400mm lens and found that it worked in MF mode only. As others have reported, neither Sigma nor Panasonic teleconverters work on the SL 90-280mm. My first thought was, why have an alliance if there are so many incompatibilities? Then it occurred to me: maybe the SL cannot AF at f/13 (or whatever aperture that matchup produced) . . . However people may regard old R telephoto lenses in the contemporary context, that they are simpler to use cannot be denied! 😅
