Great coinage! Mine suffers zoom creep too. Somewhat annoying. Other than that a brilliant lens.

Yes, when walking about using strap (Peak Design). Don’t like lens protruding outward from hip. I would check with Leica Service to see if they have a means to address. Don’t know if DAG deals with SL line. Selfishly, I hope this is more about sample variation, with a remedy, and not inevitable. Jeff
michali Posted March 23, 2021 Share #43 Posted March 23, 2021 Thankfully so far mine doesn't creep either. What's interesting is that far cheaper & lighter weight lenses have the lock button to stop lens creep e.g. Sigma 100-400mm L. A case of Leica cutting corners? Slender Posted March 23, 2021 Share #44 Posted March 23, 2021 (edited) Hmmm, perhaps but also most of the time those stop-locks only works at the base focal lengh (ie 24 on a 24-70/90/105....). I had near misses when I wanted to suddenly zoom in and forgot to take this off. If there was a lock I would like it to have at ANY position (idealy on a lens that doesnt vary in lenght lol). Perhaps we could reverse that supposition by saying that other manufacturers "cut corner" by not making their lenses creep-resistant and resorting to use a lock 😸 Edited March 23, 2021 by Slender

AZach Posted March 23, 2021 Share #46 Posted March 23, 2021 No creep, carrying mine lens down with Peak Design strap since Oct 2017.
northernlights Posted March 24, 2021 Author Share #47 Posted March 24, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Mine has no creep too. Creep means the lens extends due to the gravity. No mine does not.
scroy Posted March 27, 2021 Share #48 Posted March 27, 2021 I use a wide rubber band to reduce the zoom creep on my 24-90. Its cheap and ugly, but it works.

chris_tribble Posted March 27, 2021 Share #52 Posted March 27, 2021 If it’s that bad and it’s still under warranty I’d contact Leica service. This shouldn’t be happening and it must be possible to adjust.
scroy Posted March 27, 2021 Share #53 Posted March 27, 2021 Here's what my lens looks like with the band. It partially overlaps the zoom ring and the body of the lens. The lens still zooms smoothly and the zoom is minimal at all zoom lengths when in use. If I'm hiking, though, I still notice some creep. Welcome, dear visitor! MarkP Posted March 28, 2021 Share #55 Posted March 28, 2021 I had a similar problem when hiking and posted ages ago about using an elastic band overlapping the barrel and zoom ring. Australia Post uses red rubber bands to bunch letters together and they’re just perfect for the job. I get at least a few daily with mail to my office🙂. I had the lens adjusted recently by Leica and I don’t have the problem any more.

gtownby Posted April 16, 2021 Share #59 Posted April 16, 2021 I decided to run some informal tests of my SL 24-90 Vario compared to my M 35mm Summicron ASPH (Ver 1) and my M 50mm APO Summicron. My impressions at f/8: 1. At center frame, no real differences between the lenses. (However, at some larger apertures, the Vario's auto-focus was better than my manual focus of the M 50mm APO.) 2. At slightly off center the SL 24-90 Vario outperforms the 35mm Summicron ASPH (Ver. 1). 2. At slightly off center the M 50 APO Summicron outperforms the SL 24-90 Vario. So, based on this very rudimentary test, I can see why many compare the SL 24-90 Vario to prime lenses -- at least the non-APO primes.

I can endorse this. Having just completed an artist portfolio / promotion shoot for which I took the SL 24-90 and the 75 APO, I ended up using the 24-90 for pretty well all the shots - and was blown away by the quality. I also have to say that I was converted to the use of "face recognition" mode for the head shot and contextual portraits. As I bought the SL2 at the beginning of the pandemic, this was the first opportunity I've had to use it for a real world purpose - and I was very impressed by the accuracy and flexibility it offers. SO looking forward to the UK becoming a bit more open in the coming days - and, please God, that things improve around the world. Stay safe. Welcome, dear visitor!
