my lim's design half-case with grip and a matching neck strap arrived to day to join my lim's thumb grip. the leather actually smells like leather and not dead dog, which is always a plus. between the front grip built into the case and the thumb grip on back, there's now enough gripping surface for me to feel confident i won't drop it on my walks. the neck strap is nice, but sadly the connectors are the opposite of the op/tech system and i can't use my skulls wrist strap. :) i'm going to try both the lim's and my peak slide lite to see which one works best in the real world.

one of the advertised features of the lim's case is a 'dovetail', a piece of metal about 2" long by 1" wide at the bottom of the case and includes a tripod socket. nothing has really explained what this is for except maybe having a more solid support for tripod mounting, but there's grooves along the sides and there are hints that this might mate with a tripod for quick release, but it sure doesn't look like arca swiss which is what about 90+% of the tripods use. anyone have this case and know what the purpose is?

now i'm all queued up and ready to go and we have two days of rain and cold tomorrow and the next day. <sigh>

goat wants to play as well. just took a short walk and the goat pen is my favorite stop. one of them always makes a beeline for me, but i didn't see him today--hope they haven't turned him into carne de cabra or glue. but this one out of a pair of twins seems nearly as friendly, but still a little skittish.

i can't make up my mind on this one. at first i tossed it in the reject pile, but it's been growing on me, i think because of the lack of anything to place or categorize it.

Regarding your question about the dovetail on the Lim case, I have found that it fits the tripod mounts which I use. They are not made by Arca Swiss but are claimed to be compatible. As the dovetail is flush with the bottom of the case you cannot slide it on but must open the jaws of the  tripod mount sufficiently to fit the dovetail. I have found it very stable in use.

thank you! i'll give it a try. i rarely use tripods, but i do put a 25x25mm mini arca plate on the bottoms of some of my cameras in order to have an anchor point to allow me to carry the camera grip-up with a sling.

I ave that case on my CL and love it. I got a 3 legged thing arca type clamp which mounts it very securely to my tripod. I use tripod very often and love the quick disconnect feature.

That's a nice feature on this case! The grip on the front isn't so important to me, I wonder if it will get in my way, but the fact that the case has an integrated A-S type foot and the battery door/card slot access is left open and unimpeded is a plus. Of course, whether I want to spend yet another $160 for yet another half case is a bit of an issue. LOL! :D

about the only nit i can pick with it so far is that the battery compartment is so deep down from the bottom of the case and the tolerances are close, i can't hook a finger onto the sd card to lift it up. i'll have to refine my technique perhaps letting the spring eject the card more but it's not near a dealbreaker.

there are some hex head bolts at the bottom of the case going into the grip. perhaps it's possible to remove it? /guy

The grip can be removed by removing the 2 screws on the bottom.

but doesn't that leave the grip's mounting boss still, standing proud of the bottom of the camera? It looks like the base is one piece.

Yes the base is one piece and I'm not sure removing the grip would be a good idea.  I was lucky enough to be gifted my Lim's case by an ex member of the forum who had sold his CL. It's very useful for larger lenses and for occasional tripod use, my travel tripod has an arca type clamp.

I guess I am the exception here, but I have never had a problem holding the CL. I handle it like an SLR, right hand on the side with the shutter and the wheels left hand under the lens, with m lenses it might be 2 fingers to focus, I feel the camera is stable. Oh yes I am 6' 2" 220 lbs with big hands.
