Wonderful moment!

still fun with IR, this result from Hoya 092

not convert to B&W just only use LR white balance

Seriously beautiful !

Very nice shots there menos, awesome! Very nice panning...

I used to shoot motorsport before I switched to rangefinder, I want to do some of that again but with my M8. Can I ask did you use ND filters? Do you carry a bunch of them with you, or do you find that one filter in particular covers most situations? (Not sure if you're also on the RFF forums, but I ask this question of anyone that I see doing motorsport with a rangefinder!)

chounws - I really like the IR look, very interesting. Another thing I have to get around to one day, get myself an IR filter...

dotfoto - I really like that last photo of the smoking man and the reflections.

Hey mugget, thanks ;-)

I didn't use any NDs this year (I should have).

I am still not really decided on a few sets of lenses for certain purpose and continue to play with so many different lenses, that I impossibly could have proper NDs for many of them.

Once, I have sorted this out, I will prepare two different NDs for each lens, that I plan, to use with slow shutter speeds in bright light.

The main issue, shooting motor sports from the spectator restricted areas really is fences - NDs help a lot there.

Here are a few shots, I just uploaded on flickr:

I really like shooting the late black Canon RF lenses for motorsports - the focus throw is perfect for focussing wide open, unlike modern Leitz lenses, which are just "twitchy".

I just finished a transaction on yet another epic, classic lens and can't wait for the day, I can shoot low light motor sports with this beauty - a Nikkor-S.C 8.5cm ƒ1.5 ;-)

HI Menos,

your new LeMans images are great. The 'freeze' image showing the car going into the grand stand turns does a great job of 'setting the scene', but can't hold a candle to the panning images for communicating the speed and action of the race itself. Much like my 'batter' image ends up looking a touch static because the ball is frozen in the moment just before bat connects with it, that race car in the scene setting image could easily have been going 10 rather than 50 or a 100kph.

As for those panning images, I don't think I can think of a single criticism. The moments caught seem wonderful, the panning seems wonderfully executed, your exposure choices seems well done, and your post-processing seems wonderfully executed by my eye.

My only 'comment' on them would be to wonder if using a cropped camera (M8!) would give you a tighter image with less cropping? :-)

I'm going to have to try out this filter. Great shot.

The M8 is wonderful for Intentional Infrared Photography, Wilfredo.

The real trick to it is coming up with images that are strong aesthetically and don't simply rely on the IR Effect to create there interestingness. (if that's a word!)

Note: Don't forget to focus using your rangefinder then adjust the focus ring over to the ir focus indicator as you shoot. Further, not all lenses are completely happy shooting in the infrared spectrum. Some have hot spots in the middle, poor 'focusing' of infrared under any circumstance, and other niggling little issues.

Thanks for the comment Richard!

It's always interesting, how people feel about a certain detail or look!

This year, I experimented a bit with "frozen" shots in certain situations, as I found out some ideas during my Formula 1 shooting.

In fact, the bigger print shows some detail to motor sports fans, that the Porsche in the shot is very much in heavy action with it's chassis hard compressed form the small compression in this right hand corner of the chicane and the eminent body roll of the car, going sharply around the kerb.

It really is just the small web sized JPGs, that don't reveal such important details well :-(

I have a very similar shot as a comparison from three years ago on my blog.

Then in 2009, I approached this very scene very different with a slower shutter, wider aperture and a longer lens - have a look here:

Flying Lizard Motorsports - a photo from the past

Wilfredo, that pink portrait is fantastic, really would look nice as a diptych with both expressions emphasized even more!

*Accidently didnt use a UV/IR for this one. Was a hot and sunny day and I suspect the surplus of IR in the air is yukking my ability to well balance the colors.

Can I remind everyone of the forum size limits for images, please?

960 pixels on the long side, 300kb max file size. This INCLUDES images linked through from outside hosts such as Flickr or Google.

Thanks
