WOW.  Bet that could make some noise if you were close by.  Pretty cool.  So, what causes that?  A drop/rise in lake level?

We had two very cold days and the lake partially froze over. That was followed by a stretch of unseasonably warm weather and high winds which broke up the thin ice and blew it toward the shore. It's now been very cold for several days and the lake is solid enough to walk on (but I won't be the first to test that.)

When the ice gets very thick and the temperature drops into the sub-zero range, we often get "icequakes" as the layer expands. They feel just like small earthquakes and shake the whole house.
