ymc226 Posted November 26, 2019 Share #1  Posted November 26, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am not too sophisticated when it comes to computer hardware and software and have a few questions. Currently, I am very comfortable using LR6 which is freestanding and am satisfied with the post processing results using RAW files from my M10, M9-P, M9MM and SL. I also use the various plug ins such as Silver Efex Pro and DxO Viewpoint to achieve my desired effects.  I am contemplating switching over to Capture One Pro 20 when it comes out but there will be the inevitable learning curve. Also C1P does not have my preference of panoramas built in but is not an absolute deal breaker. I do export my files as TIFFs and use ImagePrint as my printer software. My questions are: is it possible to covert the native SL2 RAW file via the Adobe DNG coverter to a format recognizable by LR6? if so, would there be a loss of functionality, quality or malleability in these files? what would be the workflow? Would one transfer the files from the SD to the computer, then run them through the Adobe DNG converter, and finally import them to LR6?
Advertisement Posted November 26, 2019 Posted November 26, 2019 Hi ymc226, Take a look here Lightroom 6, SL2 and Adobe DNG converter. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ymc226 Posted November 26, 2019 Author Share #2  Posted November 26, 2019 I looked on Adobe's DNG converter and could not find a link to a list of supported cameras specific for the converter. Adobe's description for the converter includes the ability for back compatibility of newer cameras' files to be processible in older versions of Lightroom and Photoshop. Hopefully this will be possible. MediaFotografie Posted November 26, 2019 Share #3  Posted November 26, 2019 Hello ymc226, I think you can use it this way; Adobe's Converter allows you to choose "Compatibility" - here you have to select an older version of ACR. Maybe it will work out of the box because Leica uses native DNG, just try it. But Metadata from SL2's files tells us: DNG Version           : 1.4.0.0 DNG Backward Version      : 1.3.0.0 Maybe 1.3 will not work with LR6,. don't know
Jeff S Posted November 26, 2019 Share #4  Posted November 26, 2019 Of course another alternative is to move to LR Classic, which has the same interface as LR6, but with many improved features/tools and up to date profiles, and of course all the same data management. For me, spending 120 bucks a year (which also includes Photoshop) is a no-brainer given the many thousands of dollars I spend on all other aspects of my photography.  I don’t use cloud storage, so really no change from my standalone LR approach (and coordination with IP). Jeff
MediaFotografie Posted November 26, 2019 Share #5 Â Posted November 26, 2019 maybe this here helps? https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html#Leica btw, I could open SL2 DNG files just from the beginning in LR classic, even when Adobe didn't official support the camera
Chuck Albertson Posted November 26, 2019 Share #6 Â Posted November 26, 2019 I haven't had any problems opening SL2 files in LR 6.14. It just uses the "Embedded" profile, as there isn't an Adobe Standard profile for the camera.
ymc226 Posted November 26, 2019 Author Share #7  Posted November 26, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks for all of the replies. Great news that LR 6.14 can open SL2 files.

Given that my work flow is home computer based, not mobile, I’ll stick to LR 6 for now with C1 Pro as my back up plan.

Adobe is month to month.... and so am I. Jeff Edited November 26, 2019 by Jeff S

There has been no factual discussion of Adobe requiring cloud storage for your files. Adobe has added an option to use cloud for your files, which is nice for those who need it or want to use iPad to synchronize photos with their desktop apps. I think LR CC (Photoshop included) is the best path forward.

FWIW IÂ carefully scraped almost all Adobe software from my computer a while ago. Â Only use the stand-alone DNG Converter so I can losslessly pack down uncompressed DNGs to more reasonable filesizes. Switched to C1 Pro back in 2016 and Affinity Photo in 2017. Â No more rent-seeking subscription ware for me thanks. Of course, YMMV.
