I spoke with RRS today and they are aware that the original SL plate will not work, having already done some initial testing with an SL2 prototype . They said that the expected timeline for the new SL2 baseplate should be about one to two months.

They only thing will fit with new SL 2 is the battery BP - SCL4 :D

Even the release remote cable is different.

Yes. It looks like I can use a pocket wizard to remote trigger the camera. Two sockets too. If that's true, I will say that Leica is on the right path.

I am still hoping that the existing L bracket might fit the new base plate when it is available. That component costs more than the baseplate. I am sure that will be investigated in the design.
I guess it will depend on demand but a new design that would fit the SL2 with the new  multifunction hand grip would be the best of all for me. There was never one available for the S with grip attached because I guess so few customers used those together. Actually I noticed the one piece bracket for the S is not shown on the RRS site at all currently

Just to confirm what we were told. Today I got my SL2. No my RRS Baseplate does not fit. There is a locating stud adjacent to the tripod socket bolt in the SL version and no corresponding recess in the camera baseplate.

However if RRS follow the same general design, I see no reason why the detachable L  Bracket could not be the same

Last night I emailed RSS to get some verification, and just received this reply:

"Thank you for your email.

The Leica SL plate will not fit the SL2.

We haven't finalized our plans concerning this camera yet, and so we don't have anything to announce at the moment. Once we do, such an announcement would probably first come from our newsletter, so I'd recommend subscribing if you haven't already. You can do so here:

If you have any further questions for me, please let me know. Thanks!"

Which is the same cut-and-paste response I received on Dec 19th, so no movement on it at the moment.

I received this from them on 12/15/19:

"Although we have begun development on the SL2 plate system, we cannot proceed until we receive the final version of the camera in-house, and we are unfortunately still waiting on ours to arrive.

A broad estimate for production to be completed and fulfillment on orders for the SL2 plates is projected for late-January/early-February."

That's great news, wonder why they didn't say that when they emailed me a few days later?

I keep putting it in the basket, and then taking it back out.

I just can't bring myself to swallow the international shipping charges. It doesn't get any smaller if I just wanted the base plate.

Added onto that, I'll get hammered on VAT & duties on the shipping charges, on top of the ones for the bracket, as well.

It works out at two thirds of the price my new Sigma 70mm Macro lens (hoping I have that this month) is costing, which just seems crazy.

I know the RRS stuff is lovely, absolutely beautifully made, I've had RRS L brackets on three previous cameras, so I'm not anti RRS.

I may still cave in and order, but unsure at the moment, especially as the real reason I love the RRS brackets is they are nice enough to leave on the camera, and so use them for extra protection from bumps etc.

So what % is the additional cost to your $6K camera body, which you’re trying to improve.

Just trying to help. 😁

A very fair point @Jeff S although I had to sell three cameras and eight lenses to buy the SL2, and am in the process of flogging more kit to buy a used VE24-90mm

I know it is the right solution, but I can get the utility in other solutions (like a 3 Legged Thing QR-11L) for the times I will actually be mounting it on a tripod

Just spending about  $70.00 on shipping that hurts, even before £65-£75 (about $85-$100USD) on import and handling costs.

Logic shouldn't be part of this discussion though. 🙂
