Beach Sputnik - I succumbed to photographing the lifeguard tower as so many other photographers do. I probably wouldn't venture onto the beach with my camera if there were words of people.

Wonderfully vibrant street portraits as usual Trickness. Not that any of these great images have some kind routine or commonplace process to them. I can imagine how each image would require great skill to position yourself, gain proper focus and be aware of lighting and exposure at any one point in time. And there wouldn't be much time to do all of that out there on the street. You have a good rhythm going for you with regard to working that 75 Noctilux (and 50 1.4) superbly. Of course there is post production for all these images to create the look that is very stunning.

Ken I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to post such a kind note about my pictures. You're right about the brief time there is to get these, although I guess we all deal with that to some degree, there's never enough time 🙂.  The light is often a challenge because the subjects are chance encounters, so I often switch between hunting and fishing - I work in Soho a lot and try to find an active area with good light. But if I see an interesting subject and the light is bad, I work with what I've got anyway. There is often good street art on the walls so I'll sometimes move a subject once I get consent for a photo and then position them so their portrait works within the shapes.

I did a mentorship with Ralph Gibson recently and paramount among the many profound things he shared with me was this: to be responsible for everything happening in the frame; meaning subject matter, composition, proportion, shapes, lightness and darkness, and the interrelation of all these things. I'm fully conscious of all these things much more now when I am framing an image (although I don't succeed every time, obviously, nobody does). He said "if you don't take responsibility for your frame, who will?" I think many of my portraits were not conscious enough of what was in the frame beyond the subject, and my goal is to get past this in all my pictures. Really though, I think this could be applied to any picture - and when I look at any photograph now, this is foremost in my mind.

I've been shooting with the 75 SL APO lately and it's just so superb. Post processing a bit with Nik Collection, been trying some film emulations just for fun. The color in your lifeguard station (wonderful capture by the way!) is gorgeous, there's a bit of a glow about it too. Quite lovely.

Many thanks again Ken ✌️

Reeling in the lights - I pushed the button on this one, although it was my friend's SL2 and his studio set up.
