MarkP I woke to see that Nick Rains from the Akademie here released an initial impressions report , having been using one already. I know Nick and was actually chatting at an unrelated event a few days ago. He of course quite properly was unable to make any mention of the SL2 then. He is currently  overseas.

Obviously world time zones would make a synchronised launch event impossible. So while we haven’t had a large event (and we are after all a tiny market segment) the information was released here at the same time as everywhere else. Now to see what happens with availability of stock out here. I have no inside knowledge but will take a guess that Leica Camera Australia will do something , perhaps in concert with the official stores in Melb and Sydney when they have cameras to show?

Guess that Leica representatives were wrong about the weight. 

They told us that SL2 is 12g lighter than SL. But actually SL2 without battery is 12g lighter than SL with battery ! It's like comparing oranges with apples

In reality SL2 is heavier at 917g vs SL 847g. 70g of difference. 

Hopefully the new handgrip is so superior to accommodate human hands, that the SL2 feels lighter in the hand than awkward SL ! Well done Leica.

Another trick in the sleeve of Leica the magician : the design cues like the horseshoe around the lens mount and the bigger prism, make us believe that SL2 is smaller than SL. But it is only an optical illusion. The SL2 is actually slightly bigger than SL ! Once again, well done Leica.

To sum up the SL2 is 2,690 € more expensive than S1R. For this extra price, you got everything that S1R offer except tilting screen. However you get :

• Slimmer filter stack of 2 layers instead of 3. For better image quality when using M lenses.
• Special array of micro-lenses 
• A brand new Maestro III CPU
• 100g lighter
• Less buttons and dials
• Easier UI. Totally subjective point.
• A better design. Of course you can prefer Lumix S design
• A more luxurious material choice. Top plate in aluminium and rest of the body in magnesium, wrapped with leatherette. Which is better than the 100% magnesium S1R
• Use SL & Q2 battery. A valid point if you own one of these two cameras.
• Dual SD UHS-II card. Instead of mismatch SD + XQD cards

S1R has also focus shift shooting (focus bracketing), and multiple exposures. I would have preferred XQD/CFExpress to SD cards. Nonetheless, my preference is SL2.

You still have ‘lighter’ in your summary.  But you can add better weather sealing ... IP 54... including shutter dial that apparently doesn’t penetrate body and is magnetically controlled.

Do you mean the magnetic coupling of the top wheel? As far as I remember a member of Leica Akademie told this at a seminar about the original SL about three and a half years ago. I never heard of problems there.

The other plus compared to the S1r is better video specifications. That being said, it's still "L-log", which is an undocumented format with no NLE support and no ACES IDT, so the S1H is still the better video camera for larger projects.

David Farkas mentions all-glass EVF optics, which could be significant.

I had a play with the SL2 at Leica Mayfair this morning. It's hugely impressive, and the body is more comfortable in the hand than the original SL (which I rented over Christmas 2016) - but it's still a heavy brute of a thing. I can go for most of a day with my M9 or 10 cradled in my hand, strap wrapped around the wrist and barely notice it; I'm no weakling, but think with the SL2 I'd be finished after an hour, even with an M lens mounted rather than one of the huge SL ones. I remember from using the SL that it was a magnificent machine for taking pictures, and I was hoping that this version would be more comfortable, but it's not for me - at least not while my eyes are still up to focusing a rangefinder.

One half pound difference from M10, using same M lens, and now with a superior grip without any add-on.  Plus both come with straps for easy carry over shoulder or chest if and when one needs a break from hand carry.  For me, the big difference is in the lenses, particularly with native SL zooms, offering a different use case.

It’s not so much the extra weight as the form factor; the Ms sit comfortably in my palm with my thumb and forefinger round the lens. There’s no way you can do that with the SL(2) - you have to have your fingers round the grip and, well, grip it. I’m not saying it’s not a superb camera, just that for me, and people who like to carry their camera as I like to do, it’s less practical than an M.

That would be a delay from David Farkas’ information last year indicating all three in 2020.  I was hoping for more, not less.

The Matt Granger interview is kinda long and unstructured.  If you want to confirm Stefan Daniel's revision of the SL lens ship schedule, look between 10:30 and 11:05.  Yep, only the 28 in 2020.  My credit card breathers a sigh of relief, as I can do just fine with the M 28 summilux asph.  The one I am waiting for is the 24.  Maybe the money deferred can go into a nice trip somewhere.
