Some more test shots. Compression here doesn't do the camera justice, of course.

One more from my trip to Martha’s Vineyard this summer.  This is the Milky Way and Jupiter setting along the edge of Sengecontacket Pond (a little pool of which you can see in the foreground).  I had a heck of a time getting exposures that didn’t include car headlights or tail lights as the main road connecting Oak Bluffs and Edgartown runs Right behind the tree.  The longer I waited, the more the Earth turned and the Milky Way set and the poorer I was able to align frames.  This is a median combine of 17 separate 8s exposures at ISO 1600 and f/2.  Processed on an iPad using Affinity Photo and Lightroom Mobile.  The “halo” around the tree is light pollution from Edgartown in the distance—not a processing artifact.

👏🏻👍🏻 pretty cool

till yet i only used my fuji for nightsky. today i get my q2 , glad to see it is definitely possible to catch some milkyway and stars

It is, perhaps, not the best tool for the job, but it works quite well.  This one was at f/2.  I suspect f/2.8 would have been a bit better due to lower astigmatism in the corners, but it is pretty decent as is.  And the 28mm focal length is not a bad choice for this kind of shot.  All in all it’s quite workable for nightscapes.  Most of the challenges in this one were due to working on an iPad rather than a notebook.  Fewer tools.

Greetings from bavaria/ Ronald

Just to give you a head star, here are the challenges to using the Q2 for this kind of photography...

1) Remembering turn off OIS.  I ended up setting a profile that is “tripod” specific so I wouldn’t make that mistake.

2) If it’s really dark out (no Moon/no lights but the stars) just getting the composition right will be a minor challenge.  ISO 50,000 with lens wide open will still leave the EVF too dark to compose.  Just take 1s exposures with ISO at max to see what you’ve got and “guess” at how much to move the camera, then shoot another 1s picture to confirm.

3) If you want stationary stars, the long exposure limitation limit is a slight hassle, but not much of one.  At ISO 1600 you are limited to 8s exposures where something like 16s would have been optimal for a 28mm lens.  That means read noise is a bit more intrusive vs shot noise, but it’s not a terrible compromise.  If you are using a tracker, though, the max exposure limitation is a problem since you’d probably prefer 1 minute or longer and the ability to turn off LENR.  Probably just the wrong camera if you are going to use a tracker. With a tripod, though, it’s good enough.

4) I was processing on an iPad which has a few problems.  First, Lightroom Mobile has no stacking capabilities.  I used Affinity Photo instead.  Second, Lightroom Mobile will only export JPG’s which means much of the workflow is 8-bit.  This seriously hurts with shadow noise.  Not a problem for the sky, but definitely an issue for the land portion of the image.  Finally, there is no good tool I am aware of for aligning and stacking stars on an iPad, let alone merging the sky and land.  Stars along the edges and corners are going to be poor after stacking using things like Affinity Photo which will transpose and rotate but won’t correct for distortion.  Finally, image stacking is sloooow on an iPad using Affinity Photo at least.  Given the strength of the CPU on a modern iPad Pro this may be specific to the software, but just “flattening” 16 or 18 layers in 48 megapixel files can take more than an hour, and you must leave the app in the foreground.  All of these issues simply vanish if you use a laptop instead.  I will likely re-process my night shots when I get home to a real computer.

5) I think I would recommend f/2.8 as the best compromise between speed and star sharpness.  You’ll see some significant astigmatism and coma in the corners at f/2 or faster—stars shaped like seagulls when viewed at 100%.  This is normal, not a lens defect.

That’s about it.  The Q2 is actually quite competent at this kind of work.  Not optimal, perhaps, but pretty decent.  Just wish they would get rid of the exposure length limitations and LENR requirements. Then I could use a tracker and a master dark frame.

Walking around Boston yesterday afternoon... I liked the contrast of the modern building and the older light post, the similar shape/perspective/lines, the similar tones, and the corner of (unfortunately overexposed) sky.

@Jared - did you manually align stars in Affinity? 😮

I use Starry Landscape Stacker on the Mac, which automates this process quite well.

On the Mac there are lots of stacking options.  I actually tend to use PixInsight (dual boot in Windows). It has better methods than Affinity’s median combine for eliminating satellite trails while still getting the SNR of a “mean” combine. It also does well with auto star alignment including perspective correction for wide angle lenses. I’ve only got my iPad with me at the moment, though, and as far as I know there is nothing good for star alignment on a tablet.

I cropped out the ground and then let Affinity auto align the stars.  In this case it did a pretty poor job.  It seems to have handled the translation and rotation fine, but did not apply any perspective correction so the corners and edges are, to say the least, poor.  I could have done the perspective by hand, but that seemed like a lot of work while still on vacation.  Plus, the iPad forced me to work in 8 bit mode, so it was probably going to be wasted effort no matter what. I’ll do a better job when I am home.

I merged an aligned sky layer with an unaligned foreground layer to make the final image.  I also pasted in the Jupiter reflection from a single frame since I didn’t process that section of “sky” separately.  It’s possible there is a Milky Way reflection embedded in the pond as well, but I don’t think I have enough data to pull that out of the shadows. Certainly not with just 8 bit JPG’s.  We’ll see when I get home and can do all the stacking with raw data.
