Male Broad -tailed Hummingbird from above. This kind of photography requires a lot of patience. For one,  the Q/Q2 is not really well suited for this and two, the dang FOTOS App will not allow operation with manual focus. A simple shutter button cable release would be tremendously helpful, but there's no screw hole as with the M cameras. Since there are no I/O connections, the only choice is to hold my finger on the shutter button and wait for a Hummingbird to come to the flower. No kidding, I spent better part of an hour this morning with my finger on the button. Crazy. I do love the end result when I get a good photo. This one is okay, but I will do better. I was struggling with getting the flashes set up properly which I didn't really achieve thus the wing movement. Note to self, do not leave the polarizer filter on when photographing in low light conditions. Stay tuned,  better images coming. Leica Q2, 1/1000, f/5.6, ISO 800, on tripod with the Canon MR-14 EX II ring flash and two Canon 600 EX-RT flashes on light stands.

BTW, this image shows exactly how flashes pulse the light to reach the pre-set desired exposure. See how the wings are sharp in approx 6 places. That means the flash sent out six pulses of very narrow duration. If I had chosen a lower flash power setting, it would have sent out fewer pulses and ideally I would have set it to send out only one pulse.

The quality of your work is so good that I wonder if it wouldn't be worth the investment in a better suited camera - lovely as the Q2 is!

One from this evening. My kids are always moving, as all kids are.  Got a bit of a side project going photographing them with slow shutter speeds.  Will share the whole project at some point

Thanks. I have a better camera for this kind of photography. A Canon 5D3 with either a 100mm macro lens or 70-200 lens. 6 Canon flashes. Numerous light stands and tripods. Everything works well. I have many photos of hummingbirds taken with that camera and setup. If you’re interested:

I’m mostly having fun and pushing the Q/Q2 beyond what it was designed to do. Please forgive my whining. I like using the Q2 and it’s so close to being well suited for this work. It’s fun trying to take photos that no one else has taken.

One of the magical aspects of the Q cameras is the leaf shutter. I can literally use the flashes all the way to that very short time duration of 1/2000 sec. Its the way I manage making the background dark, but keeping the bird well lit. A subtle, but significant part of using the Q / Q2

Dan,  Amazing stuff--all the more so given the limitations of the Q2, as you mention!  I actually like the sense of motion in the wings, and the energy and life it conveys.  Keep 'em coming!

Your dedication to the craft is inspiring, and the results clearly reflect it!  Where do you find the time and energy??  I get exhausted just looking at the cool gear and thinking about what to do with it!  😵

What a wonderful gallery and web site.  I will have to visit it often - can't absorb it all in one visit!
