Why? Look at the "body" language. I'm sorry if you find the suggestions strange. Do you have a better idea?

It's an art installation obviously. To me they look like "Smombies", Smartphone Zombies, or in other words like every second person on the street, wandering into the water because they can't pay attention to real life anymore. I like it.

Perhaps their phones fell into the water and they are looking for them!

Yes, obviously an art installation. I hope the original poster informs us

Oh, cool, thank you. They're amazing, they light up too. I did some more digging and: "The artists have been asked to create a work of art with the theme of technology and AI and their effects on daily life" Close up shots show they really do look dejected.

Because they are hunched, with shoulders slumped. Don't you read body language? Follow the links and see them in more detail. It's worth googling them, lots more pics of them plus other installations in the event. They really are very cool

David, I just did a bit more research, and here's a quote from the Amsterdam Light Festival website:

What happens when you feed AI generator DALL-E 2 our artist briefing and ask it to create light art? You get humanoids who seem surprisingly melancholic, trudging along the street. This is what Atelier Haute Cuisine shows us with their artwork. The question is; what is AI trying to tell us with this? Are we as a species suffering from the very technology we have invented, are we glued too much to our phones, or are we witnessing the next step in human evolution?

I see them as trying to look to the bottom of the river, which explains why they are bending over...

Personally, I know nothing about "DALL-E 2" whatever it is: from the description it sounds to me like a waste of time and resources. I gain nothing like this from this picture, and I am not glued to my phone -- it sits on my desk most of the time, with the bell often turned off.

I love my phone, it's my photographic sketch book when I'm out running or walking the dog and can't carry a camera; it's a way of staying in touch with distant friends; it's a tool for networking; it's a means of keeping up with political protests; it's a way of posting photos to sites; it means i never run out of books to read if i don't want to carry my kindle. Each to their own.

The problem for a lot of people these days is that the phones are not tools... they get lost in social media.
