Q2 - Tate by Daniel Cook, on Flickr

interesting capture, Dan. What is the "science" behind the fact that when you move the photo slightly, the horizontal air circulation panel seems to shimmer?

Magnify the image in steps and the shimmer should cease at some step, likely the first. Call it a mismatch between the image and screen pixel layout, or moire pattern.

On a Mac, command + magnifies, command - lowers size.

Thanks, Pico. I enlarged it 1x on Dan's flickr account, but no change. I didn't realize this was also moire. So the Q2 can produce moire?

And I just noticed that it happens with the lights in the interior room on the top floor of the photo.

The moire can occur regardless if it is captured on the sensor when it is caused by the computer monitor. The sharper and more contrast the moire subject (the higher the accutance) the more susceptible it is.

I'll bet adan can give a more accurate account.

Yea, moire can be written to the file by a camera due to lack of AA filter on the sensor - or the moire effect can be seen on the monitor due to sizing of these patterns, nothing to do with camera - you could create the effect with paint.

this is the latter

Hi

I was there a few weeks ago and found this part of the building exciting to the eye but very difficult to capture in a meaningful way.  There was something about the lines and textures that got my attention but when I pointed the camera I couldn't  get a focal point that I was happy with.

Regards

Josh

Sorry for the multiple posts but I have been away after starting a new job after 15 years with my previous company and it has dominated my time (In a positive way as loving it).

Here are a few B&W from me.  More on Flickr.  https://www.flickr.com/photos/joshbear/

I wanted the woman at the top to be looking out and be more visible, but then you see the hoards of people in the middle :( and it detracts

Say Cheese!  I spent $36 at this guy's booth at the local farmers market.  He also surprised me...he looked at my camera and said, "That looks like a Leica!."
