cbretteville Posted August 10, 2006 Share #3 Posted August 10, 2006 Flight cases for the equipment and buy/process film at your destination. Seems like a typical knee jerk reaction of over tightening 'security'. A very real one, non the less that is going to cause monumental caos at all UK airports for a while. They will have to ease back after a while. Lets just hope that is a shorter rather than longer while and that this thought dosen't 'infect' the rest of European aviation. After 9/11 the checks at US airports includes swabing hand and checked luggage for traces of explosives . That we can see happening here in Europe as well. It will make air travel even more of a pain. I wonder when they'll start imposing this kind of security on busses, ferries and trains......
andybarton Posted August 10, 2006 Author Share #4 Posted August 10, 2006 I would imagine this will last as long as the police and MI5 investigations into the 18 arrested people go on, to see how many other people may be implicated in this alleged plot. Several weeks, I would imagine, although things will settle down to mere pandemonium level reasonably quickly, as they did after 9/11. Security is so tight this morning, apparently, that even electronic key fobs to open and close your car doors are not allowed in then cabin. Expect to see people in just their boxer shorts boarding planes next... How do they treat equipment in aluminium flight cases, in the hold? Are these hand checked, or blasted with the high strength x-rays?
Michael-IIIf Posted August 10, 2006 Share #5 Posted August 10, 2006 How do they treat equipment in aluminium flight cases, in the hold? Are these hand checked, or blasted with the high strength x-rays? Industrial strength x-rays are part of it, on Radio 4 this morning they were saying the main reason is the hold baggage screening has explosives sniffers whereas the hand baggage screening doesn't. The last time I flew through Heathrow a couple of weeks ago I was randomly chosen and they swabbed my laptop and ran the swab through a mass-spectrometer thinghy, presumably sniffing for traces of explosives. Luckily it passed! I wouldn't be keen to put my laptop or Leica in the hold! Michael
ckli Posted August 10, 2006 Share #6 Posted August 10, 2006 Maybe this is a very good reason to place an order for the long awaited 'Digital M' now!

ckli Posted August 10, 2006 Share #8 Posted August 10, 2006 They still won't let you take it on board - it would have to go down below. At least, you don't have to worry about your films to be scanned by the heavy duty X-ray machine for lugguages.
Rolo Posted August 10, 2006 Share #9 Posted August 10, 2006 Am I correct in thinking that luggage in the hold cannot be locked ? "Our apologies. Your luggage has been re-routed and it will be with you in a few days - well, most of it will. Nice M7 by the way. Can I still get film?"

hm1912 Posted August 10, 2006 Share #11 Posted August 10, 2006 I see we all woke up to the same news. I don't have a problem with increased security measures on flights, although sometimes I wonder if they actually know what they are doing. But that's neither here nor there. I'm supposed to go to the States on teh 16th. If the no hand-baggage rule is still on, I need to get a hard case of some sort. I've never looked into this, any ideas where I could get one? Anything I should be looking out for if I do get one?
uulrich Posted August 10, 2006 Share #12 Posted August 10, 2006 [...] No hand luggage on flights from UK airports at all. Not even an iPod. [...] I don't know but I find this is a sold out of any kind of check-in security procedure. I wonder what they did in the past or what they tried to archive; apparently it was a would-be security check.

Anything I should be looking out for if I do get one? Pelican and Rimowa (or if you are feeling particularly flush, Zero Halliburton) can all do you a very nice hard case, but make sure that you get to the baggage carousel pretty smartly so that no-one liberates it - it is pretty obvious that they have expensive equipment of some sort inside. I have a Pelican (they are plastic, the other two are aluminium, so they will get pretty battered) and it is terrific. Comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes and they are totally waterproof. They are also cheaper (at least here) than the Rimowa or the ZH. A quick google search should fine you a supplier.
hm1912 Posted August 10, 2006 Share #16 Posted August 10, 2006 That's an expensive case. It could be cheaper to get a digital camera.

uulrich Posted August 10, 2006 Share #19 Posted August 10, 2006 These Rimowa are too soft. The easily get dents and dings even after a very short period of time.
