wlaidlaw Posted August 3, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 3, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Following a recent flying visit from my son, I appear to have lost the ownership of what was my small back up digital for the M8, a Canon 7Mp Ixus 850IS plus its waterproof housing. I am thinking of getting a Minox 5Mp DCC M3 Plus classic camera. Apart from the amusement it will cause when I shrink my M8 to 1/3rd the size, has anyone any experience with these cameras? Are they just a silly toy or are they capable of taking real photographs that anyone would want to see? Wilson
Advertisement Posted August 3, 2007 Posted August 3, 2007 Hi wlaidlaw, Take a look here Small Back-up digital for M8 - Minox M3????. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stunsworth Posted August 3, 2007 Share #2 Posted August 3, 2007 Wilson, I think the novelty is in the shape. I'm guessing they aren't that great from an image point of view - though never having tried one I'm willing to be proved wrong. I bought an Panasonic LX2 as my backup. Playing with the 16x9 format is fun. If you're interested in buying a Canon S70, let me know <grin>
tom0511 Posted August 3, 2007 Share #3 Posted August 3, 2007 Olympus 770SW is fu too. You can impress other people by throwing it into your glas of beer or taking it with you for a swim. Its very durable and while it doesnt let you choose many parameters IQ is not bad. For real backup I choose a Richoh GX100.
jaapv Posted August 3, 2007 Share #4 Posted August 3, 2007 It is a rather nice novelty, but a bit of a toy.... But at 5MP it might even be decent. Let us know
wlaidlaw Posted August 3, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted August 3, 2007 It is a rather nice novelty, but a bit of a toy.... But at 5MP it might even be decent. Let us know Jaap, That is what worries me. It is not really 5mp but 3.2 interrpolated. That can be OK as the early Fuji - Leica Digiluxes demonstrated. But it is zone focus too. I would really like to get an opinion before I splash out $199 + P&P from Adorama. Minox is asking €229 + P&P from their website and they make the thing. I am not going to get a small Leica. My wife has a 5 Mp D-Lux Mk 1 and what a heap of c**p that is. I might go for the splash proof Oly. Wilson
Shootist Posted August 3, 2007 Share #6 Posted August 3, 2007 I think it would be foolish to try this camera. Unless you can go to a store that has one on display and take some shots with it. There are much better P&S cameras then this. It is a true novelty camera.
plasticman Posted August 3, 2007 Share #7 Posted August 3, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hang on - I wanna be sure I got this straight... You're seriously considering buying one of these, but you think that this camera is "a heap of cr*p"? You see, that's actually one of the things I love about this forum - there's such a breadth of opinions and experiences, it's like a microcosm of the whole world! Well, well, I'll ponder this paradox while staring idly at this shot.

You see, that's actually one of the things I love about this forum - there's such a breadth of opinions and experiences, it's like a microcosm of the whole world! Well, well, I'll ponder this paradox while staring idly at this shot. No I am not considering buying one of those but the much improved DCC M3 Plus. I did not consider one of those c**p but the much earlier Dlux on sale in 2004. The D-Lux Mk1 is my wife's primary camera and just apart from it having died at two critical times, once on an unrepeatable cycling trip across Rajasthan, yes I do think the output is poor, the IS does not work properly, the AWB is poor and the noise levels at higher ISO's make the picture look like pointillisme - look below. For a small camera, the Canon Ixus 850IS I have just "lost" is a different world. The latest D-Luxes may be better - they would need to be. I have found a Minox M3 Plus at a very good price. If I don't think it is any good, I will sell it again on eBay. Wilson Welcome, dear visitor! plasticman Posted August 3, 2007 Share #9 Posted August 3, 2007 No I am not considering buying one of those but the much improved DCC M3 Plus. Aaaah you mean one of these I'm sorry - that does look like a much better camera! My apologies!
Iron Flatline Posted August 3, 2007 Share #10 Posted August 3, 2007 Let us know what you think of the little one - although as an aside I can HIGHLY recommend the D-Lux 3. It's my "little one".
wlaidlaw Posted August 3, 2007 Author Share #11 Posted August 3, 2007 The people I ordered from are out of stock so have refunded my payment. I have just spoken to my friend Bart at my local UK Leica dealer, H.A.Baker. He has one but like apparently a lot of others, it is not working properly. It is failing to write to or read from the SD card and can only use its internal 32MB flash memory. He says it is actually remarkably good, if they could get the SD card bit right. I might wait a bit until this problem is sorted and then get one. Wilson
sdai Posted August 3, 2007 Share #12 Posted August 3, 2007 I'm afraid here's another negative post Mr Norton doesn't want to read ... ok, take it easy, it's about a Minox though it's somewhat related to Leica. plasticman Posted August 3, 2007 Share #13 Posted August 3, 2007 Lots of samples here: Minox M3 5MP Samples hmmmm - looks to me like Minox haven't quite understood (how shall I put this?) the subtle nuances of the Leica 'glow'. Seems like they mistook it for chromatic aberration. But it does look like a mini-sized Leica M3!

farnz Posted August 3, 2007 Share #15 Posted August 3, 2007 Carsten, I have the Minox DCC Leica M3 4.0 version but I wouldn't call it a serious camera, more a novelty or something to use if there's absolutely nothing else available. I'm fairly sure that it has a plastic lens so it's unlikely to produce outstanding images. The images below are purely to demonstrate the output (no rude comments please folks:D ) and are 'straight out of the can'. Pete. Welcome, dear visitor! Jack_Flesher Posted August 3, 2007 Share #17 Posted August 3, 2007 What about the Leica D-Lux 3? I have one and think it's excellent for a P&S, has an effective 28 on the wide end and even does 16:9. However, I NEVER use it -- so if you decide you want one... ,

dpattinson Posted August 3, 2007 Share #19 Posted August 3, 2007 Heh - from the Minox site: "The DCC Leica M3 draws attention wherever it goes and its compact dimensions make it a permanent and attractive companion, ready to capture candid shots and memories of every occasion. It also serves as a reliable digital notebook." Just what you need in a compact travel camera There are a few digicams now which are dustproof and rated to 5m underwater. If I had to use one, that's the kind of thing I'd be looking for. Let's face it - you're not going to get cracking image quality, so it might as well be able to go swimming with you. (and setting the self timer and dropping it in a pint is still a good party trick).

Wilson hmm, following a recent flying visit to my Dad I seem to have aquired a 75 Summilux-M Am I the only one who doesnt get the digi-compact backup idea? Shooting film I was happy using an XA or a GR-1 as a tiny, pocketable, backup. But now there is such a huge difference in IQ between a DSLR or M8 and a compact. I have tried several, including the GR-D, but I always end up asking myself why I bothered. Either I want to take a picture, in which case I want it to be as good as possible, or I dont.....
