dpattinson Posted August 2, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 2, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) It occurred to me that if Leica were to allow the user to overload the lens coding on their camera, it would open up some interesting possibilities. If a range of codes were to be reserved for 'user lens', then the user could select focal length and vignette correction from the range available and associate them with a specific code. Allowing the vignette correction parameters and the lens names to be pluggable would make this even nicer, as third parties could contribute custom setups for rare lenses. They could even opensource this part of the firmware with a test harness to validate the results. Rather like the way the C1 profiles and cornerfix have been contributed by the community. doubice Posted August 2, 2007 Share #2 Posted August 2, 2007 David, You can have John Milich cut the recesses into just about any lens and code it yourself. Theoretically, you could code a 21mm lens as a 135mm and vice versa........ Best, Jan

Best, Jan True, but that doesn't leave the door open for custom lens naming and/or vignette correction, since you'd have to override one of the existing leica codes. You could of course just get it coded for a lens you never want to own, and override that - but it seems less elegant to me.
scott kirkpatrick Posted August 2, 2007 Share #4 Posted August 2, 2007 Getting your lens correctly recorded in the EXIF doesn't seem out of the question, but deriving a vignetting correction (between the raw data and the DNG file) for that lens, with and without a UV/IR filter would require knowledge and tools that leica probably considers very sensitive at the moment. scott

With a code, even the wrong code, a program such as CornerFix could look at the code and apply whatever correction the user associated with that code. Right now, with CornerFix you have to specify a profile for every image. With any kind of code, CornerFix could do that for you. Which was why I was hoping the latest firmware would have manual lens coding in it..... Sandy
