The specifications for the SL2 are only rumours so far so no one really knows what it will be like. If you are not in too much hurry then wait a while for an announcement, once that is out we will see more SL cameras on the used market.

Thanks! Yes, considering I’ve been thinking about this for over a year now, I can certainly hold off. I still love my M9 but my eyes aren’t what they use to be and it’s not the best camera for running grandchildren. The other thing is I want to figure out one camera system and stick with it. Along with my M9, I have a 5D III, an Olympus E-M1II, and a Small fortune in lenses for each system.

The SL is currently selling used for around 3K used... it's a great deal.

If you don't want the latest and greatest... the SL is a good buy now. Your other options are the Panasonic S1 or S1R. I sold my SL and bought an S1R, and love it.

As I've posted elsewhere, there have been camera updates I can't wait to get because of the deficiencies of their predecessors (M240, TL2), or cameras that are so new in concept or design that they are immediately attractive (CL, SL). The SL2 will be an update on the SL but I can't think of any big deficiency that I can't wait to overcome, and some things (more MP, perhaps a change in button layout) that I positively don't want. There's nothing in the SL which is holding my photography back, and I expect to hold on to it for a while longer. There are other things I would rather spend money on - oh, wait, I've just bought the 16-35SL today :).

Thanks for the reply. Just out of curiosity, is your main reason for trading in based on the 47 MPs, or are there other features you are looking for?

I am ready to use the SL system, which I love, with an updated sensor, and hopefully a bigger one. I love my SL, and the lenses Leica has produced. But the SL came out in 2015, and it's time for an update. And to finance that purpose, I am willing to give up my current SL.

By the time SL2 announced/released to market, SL will hit $2k at lower end and $2.5k at higher end. Just like Q price when Q2 released and available on market.

Since I already have 5DsR if I need 50mp, I'd hang on my SL for now. If I need to Hasselblad X1D II is pretty interesting too, they have promotional deal now body and 45 lens for $7500.

I completely respect this point of view. If you think about whether or not to upgrade an iPhone each year, there is so much to commend skipping generations. A new SL seems -- we don't know for sure -- to be on a 4-year replacement cycle. As much as I love my SL, and it is wonderful, I'd like to use its next generation. And I suspect that if the SL 3 is released in the fall of 2023, and if I am, God willing, able to, I'll probably trade in my SL 2 for that one -- not out of GAS, just out of a belief that four-year old technology is four years old.

I don't doubt that the SL2 will be a step up from the SL in many directions, some of which I would value - but, none of those discussed so far would make me empty my wallet*. And I've owned the SL since shortly after launch.
I held back when the M10 came out because the size of the M240 was not a problem for me, and the other improvements were not enough on their own.

*Mind you, if Face AF on the SL2 can recognise men with beards that might be enough.

But is it better? I still find it hard to beat some of the images I took with the DMR - 15 year old technology...

This gets into almost psychological territory, but I'll answer truthfully.

Pictures I took with my M8 are the equal or better to some pictures I've taken with my M10 -- and vice versa.

There is an aspect to photography, for me, that has to do with the pleasure of using the camera as a tool. My ability to create art does not improve with a better camera. But I will admit, some aspect of my pleasure in photography is enhanced by, yes, every four years having a new M, and every four years a new SL (hypothetically.)

I do think the SL 2 will be a better camera than the SL because I believe sensors are better in 2019 than in 2015. Because I'd like 47mp for reasons of cropping and the desire to print larger prints.

But if I am honest, and I am, there is an aspect of my pleasure in photography that comes from the tool itself. There's a reason I am on the Leica Forum, not on a "photography" forum.

We don't know precisely what the SL2 will be--presumably it will need to create a separate niche from the similarly mega-pixeled and much cheaper Panasonic S1R. So there may be some surprises.

However, if the SL2 is to the SL as the Q2 is to the Q (mutatis mutandis), then the main difference will be the number of megapixels. Despite claims of "better in every way," some folks don't think the image output from the Q2 is necessarily better than--some don't think it's as good as--that from the Q. Others think the Q2 is the second coming.

All up to you.

Not to step on my own thread, but has anyone shot sports with the SL? I understand the ability to track moving subjects may be a little sketchy

I have shot Latin dance with the 24-90 and, especially, the 90-280, using focus tracking and AFs. Works well enough for me, though I'm happy to take the word of others that Nikon does it better. As with nature photography and sports, knowing how your subjects will behave and move is key to getting good shots: in dance the ability to count to 8 is vital - for working out when a pose might be held ("......... and 5, 6, 7 and 8" ).
