Cellphones cheat, because they triangulate cell towers first - the GPS signal is actually not as good as you might think.  Leica will be using an industry standard GPS chip - no better, no worse than anyone elses.

There's still a big difference between GPS chips: Sirf (Qualcomm), Ublox, MediaTek, SkyTrak, Texas Instruments, etc.
Where the Sirf Star chipsets has always been considered by far the best chipsets on the market, hands down.
So anyone want to open up their EVF and check what GPS chip it uses? It's an easy way to see if Leica cheaped out on a slow and inaccurate MediaTek or splurged on a high-quality Sirf...

GPS satellites move through about two orbits per day (Google reminds me), but they re not short-lived 2 hour orbit LEOs. They have been up there since the 1970's.  Anyway, that's why the GPS constellation you find in any spot is hard to discover without a lot of firmware. In the 1990's,  the US military still felt the need to "jitter" the commercial signal data.  There is also a military signal, encrypted and with a much longer period, at a higher frequency.  So I ran an extension cord out to my rooftop and put a laptop up on the chimney attached to a GPS and recorded its position for about 24 hours.  The house moved around with a variation of about 200 yards during that day.  And recently in the eastern Mediterranean, there have been reports that GPS signals for airlines approaching Ben Gurion airport (LLBG or TLV) have been unreliable.  The rumored cause is a Russian ship protecting bases in Syria from the threat of cruise missiles.  I really would rather that Leica not get hung up on GPS or localization and let the phone companies deal with it.

Om the Reddotforum they say it’s a rather large update that could take updating up to 10 minutes.

Yeah my M10D was showing 'UP' Update in the rangefinder for a good 8-10 mins.  Thought something had gone wrong.

PROBLEMS now with my M10 after updating to 2.7.5.0.  My previously very staple M10 now keeps locking up with a constant red light after attempting to  review recent images.  After scrolling between 10-15 jpg's and/or dng's everything just stops and the only button or switch that functions is the on/off lever.  There seems to be a problem with this update and there is no way back to previous 2.6.5.0 firmware.  Any suggestions?  jDD

Btw, tried different SD cards, new SD cards, newly formatted SD cards, old images, new images, deleted user profiles and fully charged batteries.  Other functions such as wi-fi, taking new photos etc. all seem to work correctly.

I had a similar problem. After making the update, my camera didn't show the latest photo I shot after pressing the play button. It showed the photo I shoot an hour ago. I had to go back to find the latest photo I shot among the photos.. And another problem is after shooting a writing appear on the screen as "unknown file" and when I pressed to play button I saw the image among my files but when I come home those photo which are called as  " unknown files " were not in my sd card anymore.. and sadly I missed those shots...then I took out and reinstall my sd card into the camera, and everything become ok. And the problems of not showing the latest photo when pressed to play button and the unknown file issue dissapeared.. anyone experienced the same issue?

FOLLOW-UP on my PROBLEMS after updating to 2.7.5.0 on my M10.

Emailed good ole' Leica USA with my update problem issue and they quickly responded with a solution that seems to have, at least so far, solved my camera's locking-up issue.

Leica's suggestion was to:

1. Turn the camera OFF.

2. Remove battery and SD card.

3. INSERT a fully charged battery.

4. DO NOT insert a SD card at this time.

5. Turn ON camera.

6. Go to RESET menu and initiate a reset of basic settings.  (I maintained the NUMBERING sequenced but deleted everything else when prompted.)

7. Turn Camera OFF.

8. INSERT SD card.

9. Turn camera ON and you are set to go.

I tested the fix by quickly scrolling through ~100 images of both jpg's and dng's files and things seem normal.

Thank You Leica USA.  jDD

An ultimate solution will be to let the phone do the work in localization

Apple PHOTOS already seems to be taking a stab at this with M10-D files without any GPS data, if you happen to be moving M10-D raw photos to the iPhone X while using the phone’s GPS. The phone in that case seems to assume (perhaps after applying some conditional filters) that the photos were taken at the phone’s location. That location is not added to the raw files metadata but is used in grouping Photos by “Places”.

Okay, it completed.

I downloaded another copy from the website which strangely reported a file size which was 1 byte larger than the one I had previously downloaded.

This time it all went smoothly and reports that I am now on version 2.7.5.0

I suppose the first download must've been corrupted in some way although the camera thought that it was complete because it tried to carry out the upgrade.

Hello Marcq, I "think" I recently updated my M10-P but may have interrupted the update quite late in the process. I asked Leica Customer Service if that was OK because the Firmware number  2.7.5.0 was there but it is greyed out,  even though the camera is performing normally. Leica Customer  Service says this is correct and that the Firmware number only becomes white when there is an update.  So,  my question: Is your firmware number after update in white or grey? I would appreciate it if you got back to me. Thanks for your time.

Grey - and it's fine

I feel a little bit like an idiot and appreciate you help. I am getting the ERR message straight after the UP message when updating my M10-D firmware. Here are my steps

OK - I feel like the biggest idiot now. I checked the current version of firmware in the 'customer service' part of FOTOS and it says.... 2.7.5.0 so I guess I did it already and forgot about it..🙀🙀
