Advertisement Posted August 23, 2019 Posted August 23, 2019 Hi m9photo, Take a look here Why no fixed zoom by Leica for the SL?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Jeff S Posted August 23, 2019 Share #2 Posted August 23, 2019 So far the preference seems to be to distinguish the SL zooms competitively, at least the longer two, by focal length range extension, not speed, in order to still maintain 'reasonable' size/weight. I'd prefer some more compressed range travel zooms (35-75, 75-150, etc) that are smaller and lighter (even if slower fixed aperture if need be), not faster versions of the already big zooms. Even better if they don't telescope when zooming like the 24-90. Jeff
m9photo Posted August 23, 2019 Author Share #3 Posted August 23, 2019 The Canon RF 28-70/F2 has very good reviews, they should be able to produce similar and/or even better.
darylgo Posted August 23, 2019 Share #4 Posted August 23, 2019 Image quality priority required the variable aperture to keep the size within manageable range. Leica did the same on their much maligned X-Vario, highly criticized for it's slow lens among other things. The IQ of all three SL zooms are superb and would be garnering praise if they were Nikon or Canon, and at the same time they would be vilified by the same Nikon and Canon community for the price. BernardC Posted August 23, 2019 Share #5 Posted August 23, 2019 Leitz-Cine has announced two fixed aperture (T2.8) zooms, a 25-75 mm and a 55-125 mm. They cover full-frame, and you will be able to mount them on your SL via the PL-to-L Mount adapter. No word on pricing, but Angenieux sells a similar kit for nearly $30,000. FlashGordonPhotography Posted August 23, 2019 Share #6 Posted August 23, 2019 All zoom lenses are faster at the wide end than the longer end. *Constant* zooms are just stopped down at the wide end so the aperture is constant through the range. Leica choose not to do this. They always have, except for Cine lenses where a constant aperture is essential for filming. Both Panasonic and Sigma will release excellent constant aperture zooms in L mount if you need them. Gordon
