To sum up :

- a visually smaller body. Thanks to design tricks. But it retains 98% of SL size. All buttons, switch, dials and joystick have the same size as before.

- seems like Leica gave up unibody aluminium. Just like the Q2, I bet the SL will be 100% magnesium.

- 47MP Same sensor as Q2 and S1R

- bigger rear screen. I guess it is a 3.2” one.

availability and price. I hope for less than 6,600€ incVAT

Great news

want the same size and joystick

want magnesium, stainless steel, brass, titanium - bring it on

great sensor

great screen

if you need to ask the price .......

In France, you can get the Lumix DC-S1R at 2,558€ including tax. It is a normal price from real french stores, not grey import weird stuff.

Even at 5,500€ it will be already more than twice the S1R price. At 7,000 € it will be way too much.

- CL & Q2 three buttons user interface. Which is nice for using different Leica cameras.

It’s a no-brainer to stay in the Leica eco system now.

Sadly M10 has a different layout with LV on top, instead of PLAY. And with PLAY in the middle instead of FN. It proves slightly difficult to switch between M10 and CL or Q2 for that reason.

Ticks me off every time.

M11 should have this order : PLAY, LV, MENU.

And, therefore, will enable one to capture more ‘decisive moments.”

The M11 should have a ISO Button as well,  and on the strange ISO dial a exposure correction knob. Easier to use.

I’m left-handed, so I’m all for it.

In this case the camera wouldn´t need the thumb wheel. I would prefere a good thumb rest.

+1. This would leave the hot shoe to be used with the Visoflex while maintaining a firm grip on the camera.

Oh dear ....... heart says SL2 but head says S1R......

I know I will end up owning both ..... and I'll just have to see which gets the most use.

I'm not doing this for a living, so the camera I enjoy using ..... irrespective of the features ..... will win out.

Surprisingly I actually like using the S1R as much as the SL ..... so the extra Lumix features means the SL hasn't been used since March (and is being sold at this moment). This is a bit like confessing to infidelity, but a more buxom younger model has ousted the current ageing companion.....

I enjoyed using the Q .... but as I do mostly landscape it got little use. By contrast I use the CL but endure rather than enjoy it..... the interface is unintuitive and fiddly. It only wins by being compact, L compatible, and carried as an 'always available' camera whilst the rest of the gear is in my backpack/bag.

In some ways I hope the SL2 price is stratospherically daft that I'm stopped from buying something I clearly want rather than need ......

SL2 ports should evolved this way :

TL2 already uses USB-C with power delivery since 2017. So I guess the SL2 will also.

Isn’t that the point ?

99% of people in this forum (including me) could get just as good pictures from an X2 or a 5100. We buy this stuff as it’s just lovely to use

Is a Rolex DJ or Explorer I better then a Ball engineer III pioneer, of course it isn’t. But one has a waiting list and the other doesn’t ....

Interesting analogy but I don’t wear watches. So, what would you recommend I do?

guess a smaller SL2 was too much to hope for. They say it's 47 mps; again, maybe too much to hope for that they would take risks with a smaller, more interesting sensor. Playing it safe in this market is of course entirely understandable. Guess I'm waiting for the foveon L mount before I feel any excitement.

Foveon L is a thing?

Or just a fond wish?

firstly, great move, don't get into watches, its a money soak ...

secondly, what equipment do you have today ? and are you happy with it ?

If I can't afford a Leica camera (most of the time) I wait for the second hand price to be approx 50% of the new price. this is normally around 3 years +/- for the more expensive bodies and 1-2 years +/- for the compacts and cheaper bodies. It means you are behind but at least the bugs have been sorted. You also dont loose, and sometimes gain, on resale if you keep in good condition

Leica is an expensive hobby. i tell people never to strech themselves financially for cameras. If the Panasonic, or other, system is more comfortable, I would say go for it ...

So the worst news is that Leica chooses to use 47MP.

What it means ? Slow usage camera. No PDAF = bad AF in 2019 days. Using the dumb Panasonic DFD is not good at all.

Just by looking at how dumber the AF of Q2 became against Q one. Especially Face detect and continuous AF is still unusable. Video AF is still worthless. So I am quite pessimistic for SL2 performance.

Second concern : the battery life.

If Leica keeps the BP-SCL4, it will be nice for SL and Q2 owner for sharing the same batteries.

But the battery life will be worry some. Because Lumix S1R have a twice as big battery, and only provide quite disappointing performance. Can Leica do a better job in energy management ? Looking at Q2 it seems possible.

Could be, but with some clever marketing strategy they could try to sell it as “Das Wesentliche.”

It's still early days: aside from 47mp all we know is there are tweaks to the looks and interface. On their own, I would stick with the SL without a moment's thought. 24mp are enough for what I want, and, despite inconsistencies of interface across systems, this is not a big issue for me.

I am happy enough with the SL, so I have always been puzzled by what Leica could bring in that would make me jump. The rumours mention Bluetooth: what would that be for? IBIS? perhaps. Much lighter? could be. Flash interface from Nikon/Canon? good move, but unlikely. Better AF: that would be good. Stunning low light colours? now you're talking.

But as I start to explore video, a Sigma fp looks more likely to be in my Christmas stocking than a SL2.

Edit. BTW I'm wondering about the 'pentaprism' bump seen in the SL2 pictures. Is it bigger than the SL's? Could we have an even bigger/brighter EVF?

It is just a visual tricks to make the camera appears smaller than SL. But it is not. Just slightly.

EVF cup and glass have exact same size. An image of both EVF perfectly aligned.
