What is the best 28mm Leica? I am confusing maybe due to read a lot of comments about these so I open this topic for my choice. Please comments and let me know your idea. It is really useful for me. My only answer is : there is NO best lens in each type/focal length 😇 We are lucky to have choices in Leica M world, each lens is fine for some pictures, and for other types of use, another lens (es) CAN be better choice, so ... Summilux-M can have some field curvature (as seen on MFT charts, as I've pointed you to a while ago). In my use for landscape, I'd choose Elmarit-M for it's all around IQ. (or better yet, now I use the nice/light Summaron-M F/5.6 😉) But in darker area, or fine grain film use, I'm happy to use Summicron or Summilux (which I don't have in 28mm but in 35/50/75 in M mount). I keep it because it makes tack sharp images and is so very small. a.noctilux Posted August 2, 2019 Share #6 Posted August 2, 2019 (edited) Maybe not, as this one is for 21mm lenses and Summilux in general I understand that as newbie, questions can be not as clear as the "best lens choice" ("ideal lens" which with experiences can not exist). So why Leica "offered" in same time in 28mm F/1.4, F/2, F/2.8, F/5.6 always true. I can't justify (what for ?) owning/using three out of four those 28mm 😉. AndreasG Posted August 2, 2019 Share #7 Posted August 2, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) For 30 years I used an Elmarit 2.8/28 v3, recently I bought the v4 (first ASPH version), both are great lenses, I prefer presently the ASPH version, because it is so small, but I feel, that rendering and resolution of the v3 are slightly better, it also draws "warmer", but under real conditions and including some post processing, probably both are on a high level of quality. 1 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

It draws nicely wide open, is especially good for indoor reportage ; but is not without coma. The Summicron was my first 28mm and remains in my mind the best all round choice. I thought I would sell it after buying the Elmarit then Summilux, but now feel that would be a mistake. The IQ was outstanding and the color rendition was saturated and velvety. I traded it and have missed it many times. Later on, I acquired the 28 Elmarit ASPH ( #11677) and have been well pleased with the IQ - it is eye popping sharp with excellent contrast and beautiful color rendition. The 28 Summilux is a very tempting lens. Of all the 28mm M lenses in production, it is somewhat of a holy grail 28mm lens (IMHO, at least). Being smitten with the 28mm focal length, I would own all three of the above if it were doable. I can't see where you could go wrong with any one of the three. Sharp as a tack, contrasty and tiny. Also uses the same hood as the 35 summicron so if you have that you can find a used one that’s cheaper because it doesn’t have a hood.
