RobM Posted July 30, 2019 Share #1 Posted July 30, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello folks. Rob from Edinburgh here. Just sitting patiently for the courier to arrive with my "mint" condition (according to Leica London) Q to arrive. Very excited. The Q2 is beyond my budget, and the Q is still the most I've ever spent on a camera. I usually shoot film with my trusty (fixed-lens) Konica Hexar AF, but have had some success with the Sigma SDQuattro. But I've long coveted a Leica after having one in my hands - I really appreciate the engineering involved. I will not be a collector of Leica cameras and lenses, as I've just turned 60, and money will be tight from now on. Rather, I am looking for something that gives me high-quality images, is easy to use, and of a high build quality. All the reviews for the Q led me to press the Buy button. I doubt I will be disappointed. I shoot images most days, so this will be a fairly constant companion, especially with film processing and printing costs steeply rising. I don't think there is an image from a Leica about which I haven't found something to like, and many of them I love. I mostly shoot b&w as I love the contrast, but also because I often dislike the way digital cameras render colour. That said, there is something about Leica colour rendition which leads me to think that I will enjoy exploring colour a lot more in the future. No sign of the courier yet, but the day is young... DaleG Posted July 30, 2019 Share #2 Posted July 30, 2019 (edited) Rob, you're still a youngster. groan. Until a week ago, I had but my single simple (gorgeous, but I'm biased) Leica M3, early model, ds, with 50/2 'cron DR. But the seeds of my demise had been planted and finally last Friday, my new Q-P arrived at my door! - - as the recently released Q2 had brought prices on my sweet new addition down to the nearly affordable. gulp. enjoy and be careful on these slippery slopes - thoughts of an additional M6 & M10 seem more and more frequent... dale Edited July 30, 2019 by DaleG
RobM Posted July 30, 2019 Author Share #3 Posted July 30, 2019 Ha, thanks, Dale. Curb your addictions 😧 that's what I keep telling myself. My wife inherited a IIIb, but she won't let me near it...but the build quality looks impressive. One day she'll put a roll through it. I don't blame her, as it has an emotional connection with her father. But I can see something similar for myself in a year or two, as I still love film photography. ramarren Posted July 30, 2019 Share #4 Posted July 30, 2019 I hope your new Q arrived by now, or will soon, and will delight you as much as you hope. Regards being 60 and such ... eh, Stripling, a few years and you'll get it down. I retired a few years ago and thought things would be much tighter than they've turned out to be. That said, I don't want as much stuff as I used to anyway. But I love doing photography and having good equipment to work with is both motivating and satisfying. I'll take a new Leica or Hasselblad over an infinite number of other things I could want... Good luck, and enjoy your camera!
LexS Posted July 30, 2019 Share #5 Posted July 30, 2019 You are all youngsters compared to me, 4/3xRob. I bought the Q end of last year in full lnowledge that Q2 was on its way. Since I am not a specifications driven man, I chose the Q willingly above the Q2 (and since, I am even more satisfied that this Q is "my" camera), it had nothing to do with the price. Quality, ease of handling speed, number of pixels of the pictures (only close to 'not enough', when you want to plaster a whole building with one picture). I had all kinds of SLR's before. The 28mm is shorter than I was used to, and it took me some time to do the "two steps nearer" automatically (the Thorsten von Overgaard saying). But I am very satisfied. Wish you good days with the Q ! Lex
RobM Posted July 30, 2019 Author Share #6 Posted July 30, 2019 Cheers, ramarren. The tracking says it will be here "by end of day". Cheers, Lex. I like slightly wide lenses, so have no worries about that, and there will be more than enough pixels to worry about or enjoy...The Q2 looks great too, but I'm sure the Q will be more than enough for me. Glad you are satisfied with yours.

Welcome Rob. Look forward to seeing your images soon. I’m a bit older than you and will soon exit my decade of the 60’s. Enjoy these years. I recently upgraded to a Q2, but I thoroughly enjoyed my Q for 3 1/2 years. Its a superbly satisfying camera both using and the images you capture. A very big complement to the pleasure of the Q is the LUF. It connects you with a great group of fellow Q enthusiasts who take and share fantastic photos. Plus, they are a very eager group to help overcome any issues that arise. The good news with the Q you will not be tempted to add more lenses. Bags, tripods, half-cases, filters, straps, batteries, chargers are fair game though. 😁 Look forward to seeing your photos and hearing of your experiences. RobM Posted July 30, 2019 Author Share #8 Posted July 30, 2019 Cheers, iQ2. I've been reading quite a few of your posts on this subform. Nice to meet you. Please excuse by ignorance, but what does LUF stand for?

RobM Posted July 31, 2019 Author Share #14 Posted July 31, 2019 (edited) Well, it arrived safely, thankfully. First impression is that it is most certainly a keeper! It literally arrived twenty minutes ago, so here are a few quickies from round the house. I did DNG plus jpg, but these are from the latter - I haven't yet looked at the DNG files. Not my most artistic shots ever 🙂 Ah, only two shots allowed. Both of these are in low light, a dark bedroom. My wife spent a year in New Mexico some thirty years ago...The second shot is with the macro option - very handy! Both shots 1.7 - hard to resist trying it. Welcome, dear visitor! RobM Posted July 31, 2019 Author Share #15 Posted July 31, 2019 Is there a way to set b&w in-camera for composition purposes?
Boojay Posted July 31, 2019 Share #16 Posted July 31, 2019 (edited) Congratulations on your new camera, here's how Go to the menu > JPG Settings > Saturation > Monochrome This will make (DNG still colour) LCD and EVF will show B&W. Happy shooting. Edited July 31, 2019 by Boojay
