Has anyone tried this lens? How is it?

I very briefly had one a few years ago. Condition wasn't great, so I returned it. Strong character with very noticeable vignetting and unique color rendering. IIRC, the barreI also protruded quite a bit in the camera body, resulting in incorrect metering in some cases (at least on the M9). Edges weren't great either, but it may just have been that particular copy. I believe forum member JMF has one and uses it regularly - he may chime in and give you better feedback than I can.

Does anyone have an LTM version of this lens they would like to sell?  I have been looking for one for years.  Only 60 of them were made in LTM.

I believe the LTM numbers to be a bit higher than that, possibly a few hundred, but I don't think there's a production record for this version. In any case, it's not that hard to find. Since it's a collectors' item, price is a different issue altogether... I know a Leica dealer who has had one for sale for months - if you are interested, PM me and I'll send you his details. There are also a couple currently for sale on eBay.

Don't. Unfortunately, Amedeo adapters don't play too well with most wides. They are great for 50mm and longer, though.

There's some confusion here.

I would guess you are looking at an LTM (ie, screw) version of the lens, equipped with an LTM to M Leitz adapter.

The above suggestion - which I do not recommend due to compatibility issues - was related to adapting a Nikon-S mount lens to an M camera through a Nikon-S to M adapter made by Amedeo Muscelli.

They don't work with wide angle lenses which have a very large rear element, so the lens just does not fit to the adapter. Zeiss 21 or 35mm Biogon for example.

The 4/25mm Nippon Kogaku's rear element is much smaller. Of course I do not know whether it fits, so one has to try, which may be difficult since the items are only on sale online.

There's actually a whole thread on RFF regarding Amedeo adapter's compatibility: the Nikkor 25/4 is flagged as not compatible (will mount, but won't focus).

It is true that the adapter and/or the lens can sometimes be slightly modified and made to work nicely together (I've had it done on a Nikkor 50/1.1, also deemed not compatible) but, assuming this can even be achieved with the 25/4, it wouldn't be a trivial undertaking.

In any event, there are also a lot of Nikon collectors out there and I'm not sure the 25/4 in Nikon RF mount is easier to find or cheaper than the LTM version...

Look for a Canon 25mm, F 3.5 lens.  They were all made in LTM.  I have used one in the past....It was fine for a lens of that vintage (1956-60).  Canon made them up to 1975.  I doubt if  there is a significant I.Q. difference between the Nikkor and the Canon.  Th Canon will be cheaper to buy.

Ciao,  Sully

I had one for a while but returned it a few days later. It works well on both film/digital leicas, but it’s generally soft and lacks resolution when compared to other lenses. I do prefer vintage lens btw (my favorite lenses are Summicron 8 elements & dual range), and I also really enjoy the Summicron collapsible and the Elmar 50mm f3.5, but I find that these lenses all perform really well even wide open, with a really sharp center and lots of character. The wider lenses of the 1950s are a different talk though, and unless you stop them down to f8/f11 they do lack sharpness and resolution. Also this lens is super expensive, for the price you can buy a super angulon 21mm f3.4, Voigtlander 21mm f3.5, Summaron 28mm f5.6, all better lenses in my opinion, This is my personal experience though, others may disagree.

Hi, I have 2 LTM samples, did not know they were so rare .

Only missing the original hood if someone has a lead  , please let me know !

I is a great pancake and works fine on my digital and analog M bodies. I'll have to use it again to double check whether the meter gets fooled by the rear lens element as I don't remember correctly right now but I do remember one side of the frame getting a reddish tint on the M10,  easily cleaned in Lightroom .

I agree  with the above comments about using it at f/8-11 to get most out of this lens  .

I really like this lens, I have a mint sample and it delivers a much better res/iQ than the user 28 Canon 3,5 LTM I had some years ago. Keeping my second sample for spares.

  • 2 weeks later...

Got the lens in LTM mount with an adapater to M mount and didn’t get along with the focal length. It’s a beautiful lens though but I’ve decided to sell it and get a different one instead or maybe save my money for film. Anyway, thanks to everyone who answered questions and joined the discussion🙂.

There are a several options if you want a "classic"  rendering and are prepared to go to 28mm.

I’ll think about that after I sell this one.

I’m pretty satisfied with my 40mm for now:) Thanks!
